Root help updating

I want to update my galaxy s sgh-1897. it is rooted and running 2.2. how do I go about this and do I have to go to gingerbread first then ICS or straight to ICS and where do I get it I tried the samsung site but no luck. Thanks for any help

Moved to root section as you will need help with either flashing a new ROM or returning to stock to update to the most recent factory ROM.

You should be able to go straight to an ICS ROM without any problems, but hopefully someone with the device can help you out

It really depends on the method you used to root and which rom you want to flash. If you could let us know which kernel you've got, you might need to bring it up to 2.3 before you flash ICS on it.

Can you get into recovery? With the phone off, press and hold the vol. up and vol. down buttons then press power until the splash screen flashes. Then release power but keep holding the volume buttons. You should boot into CWM. If you can get to this menu, then you can flash an ICS rom, if you want.

I'd recommend Doc's ICS Master ROM for the first time as it includes the glitch kernel and gapps. It's a single package for everything.
