My HTC Sensation Z710e shut down today and when I try to turn it on it would only vibrate on the htc screen and then blank out.

I will boot into hboot but when I go to recovery to try to reload the backup I made from 4Ext, the 4Ext would appear and say booting and then shut down also.

Can someone tell me how to solve this problem to get the phone started?

Urgent assistance really appreciated as I am unable to make and recieve any calls.

Thanks,

Xxmen

i assume your s-off and suiperCIDed? first thing i would do is try running an RUU.

look on Shipped ROMs

what is the info on your hboot screen?

No, I am not S-off and supercid how ever the phone was replaced and it would not even turn on to the white screen anymore. It just got really hot and shut down and I have a new one today that I have not updated to ICS through ota download.

The current Hboot is now;

What I would like to know is now that I am back to 1.18.0000 and I go through the instruction to s-off and root will I be able to download the ICS ota without going back to lock, unrooted and s-on?

Thanks.

what instructions were you using?

what i would reccomend,is to run Revolutionary to acieve s-off.

DO NOT install a recovery during,or after revolutionary. by keeping the STOCK recovery on the phone, you can allow the OTA.

you will still be s-off after the OTA,and can install your custom recovery and root then.

it is important to become s-off first,as revolutionary is a much easier tool to run. if you decide to OTA while s-on,your hboot will be upgraded to 1.27 or 1.29,and the process it s-off,root,superCID,etc. will be more complicated(Unlimited.IO).

Hi Scootty85,

I have S-Off following your instructions without installing the recovery. I will now update with the ota update and then get the instructions from you to root.

Will installing the 4Ext recovery now stop all the other ota updates?

Your advice on the best of both worlds would be appreciated as I am now getting my feet wet with this process and I have already lost one phone already and do not want to make it two.

Thanks,

Xxmen

awsome! glad you are now on ics and s-off.

in a nutshell, all you need to do is:
1)install recovery as a PD58IMG(i use clockwork, but the ext 4 im sure is fine if you want to use that) clockwork download
2)wipe cache and dalvik cache flash root files via recovery superSU download

thats it. nothing complicated... now that you are s-off,stuff is easy :) may want to make a backup of your unrooted stock rom, after installing a recovery, prior to flashing superuser.

if you want superCID,just open a cmd window, put phone in fastboot:

fastboot devices (should return serial number)

then

fastboot writecid 11111111

you cAN use to check CID:
fastboot getvar cid

or

fastboot getvar all

more info here: [Guide] to Installing S-off, Unlocking, ClockWork, Root, SuperCID & S-on - xda-developers
with exception the links are a lil out dated,i had to search for the clockwork PD58IMG i linked above, and the superuser they link is for gingerbread and wont work for ICS. but the rest is good info :)

last and not least if you want to check out roms:

I just tried to write the 4ext recovery but it failed, do I have to unlock the bootloader first before I attemp this?

no,you do not have to unlock the bootloader to install the recovery, and if you care about your hboot saying locked across the top in case you need to warranty it,then you definately should not unlock it,as when you relock, youll not be able to get back to locked status. best youll be able to have your hboot display is relocked so it will be obvious to someone at your carrier,or at htc, that youve unlocked and messed with it. remember, unlocking thru htcdev does potentially void "all or parts of your warranty" and you do have to put checkmarks in little boxes stating that you understand this before hctdev will let you procede.

you are getting that response because of the locked hboot. however,as i said above, you dont need to unlock to flash the recovery, there are a couple other ways to skin the cat :D

the best, and easiest way,IMO,will be to flash juopunut bears patched ICS hboot. that way,you can use the fastboot boot and fastboot flash commands.

download it here: jp_bear_hboot

you will rename the download PG58IMG and put it onto the root of your sd card. when you power on into hboot, assuming that youve named the file correctly, and the sd is formatted FAT32,the phone will find it,and ask you to update. tell it yes. afterward, reboot, and immediately remove PG58IMG from your sd card,as it can keep you from getting into recovery thru hboot, when you really need to  charge the battery to at least 75% before flashing anything in hboot(i usually charge to 100%)

when you boot back to hboot, youll find that instead of locked 1.27.0000 you now have juopunut bear 1.27.1100

place the phone in fastboot, and your commands above should work.

the second option would be to install your recovery without unlocking,is as a PG58IMG file,as i described above(place on sd card, boot to hboot). youll need to find a download that is set up that way,or you can pack it up yourself with the android info document from some other PG58IMG download.

When I install the recovery will I still get ota updates?
if you install ANY custom recovery permanently, you will NOT be able to recieve OTAs.

if OTAs are important to you(dont forget there are other ways to get updates) then your best bet is to NOT install any custom recovery. with the jpbear hboot, you can launch your recovery temporarily, whenever you need it.

basically do everything just like you are flashing it in the code you pasted above. however, instead of fastboot flash recovery recoveryname.img you are going to fastboot boot recoveryname.img instead

so for your code above, with a recovery image named "recovery" ,you will use:
fastboot boot recovery.img

this will launch your ext 4 recovery into phone memory so you can flash root files, make or restore a backup, flash a new rom, etc, but without permantly installing it in place of the stock recovery.

that way,the stock recovery is on the phone, and if you wish to accept an OTA you can. the update will break your root, but thats not a big deal. you can just launch the recovery afterward, and reflash the superuser root files, just as youre about to do now. in other words, youll have to reroot after each OTA,but its not a big deal.

Xxmen said:
How do you wipe cache and dalvik cache flash root files via recovery?
youll flash the superSU download i linked just like you would flash a rom.using the ext 4 or clockwork menu options. i can describe the exact menu uptions to use clockwork, but i do not use ext 4,so youll need to figure it out for your self with that one. there is prolly a wipe menu, that you use to wipe cache, and wipe dalvik cache, and then a flash menu, where you can choose the file from sd card, and then pick your superSU file and flash it.

Xxmen said:
Do I have to place a file somewhere or just open a window and write the commands you suggested if you want superCID?

to write the superCID there arent any special files that youll need, just open a cmd window and enter the commands. the ability to write the cid is part of the stock hboot and the jpbear patched hboot,so you can do it with either. :)

im leaving for a bit,but holler if you have any other questions :)

Does this means that if I wanted to do a backup or restore at any time I would have to go to hboot and install the 4ext recovery all the time?

Would I also be abled to backup my apps etc with Rom manager or Titanium?

Thanks,

awsome. looks like you are good to go

What are the other ways to get the updates so I can go ahead and install recovery permanently?

just keep flashing them. :)

leaks are pretty typically released prior to anything being pushed to phones,so youll have a couple choices:

1)flash the whole, signed RUU(typically a PG58IMG type file thats flashed in hboot, but could possibly be a .exe utility, run with your phone connected on the PC)

flashing leaked ruus,to me,is exciting. ive run almost all the branded and unbranded ones on my sensation(part of the fun of being superCIDed). they will update your software and firmware,at the cost of wiping all your personal data,so youll need to re-set up the phone. flashing a whole ruu will also overwrite your jp_bear hboot, and your custom recovery. no biggie, youre s-off ,so just reinstall them after.

2)flash custom roms in recovery.

when the aformentioned leaks surface, great rom devs will update their custom roms using the new leak as a base, and someone always puts up a 100% stock, rooted rom, wich would be just like recieving the OTA. so you can continuously be a step ahead of what the folks running boring stock phones, waiting on OTAs are running :D ive been running ICS on both my sensation and rezound for months now,and the rezound still has no official OTAs so stock phones are still on GB

flashing a stock rotoed rom,or nice custom rom is great way to update to the newest software.

if there is new firmware(radio, hboot, etc) someone will pull it out,and offer it as a seperate PG58IMG flash.

hmm, based on the above, you are superCIDed and rooted. there isnt really much further you can go. try some root apps, and you should be able to grant them permission. the "superSU" superuser does look a little different in your app drawer than the typical superuser(looks like a #)

plus, you are s-off,wich most folks consider to be permanently rooted.

Does this means that if I wanted to do a backup or restore at any time I would have to go to hboot and install the 4ext recovery all the time?
correct. if you want to recieve OTAs,youll need to either keep the stock recovery, and temp install ext 4 recovery every time you want to use it,ir youll need to flash ext 4 recovery, and flash the stock recovery back if you want to accept an OTA. only prollem there,is that OTAs can sneek up on you,and if you get one with ext 4 recvoery it may not be good.

if you plan to use recovery alot, temp installing it may not be the best idea for you. it is a good idea for the crowd that uses recovery once to root, and then not again after ;)

Would I also be abled to backup my apps etc with Rom manager or Titanium?

i dont use,nor recomend the use of,rom manager. if you do wish to use it,make sure you are comfortable with the menus in recovery first. rom manager is an app,in a working rom,and therefore will not always be available to you to use. it will also not work with ext 4 recovery, youll need to use clockwork if you wish to use rom manager for backups/wiping/flashing.

titanium backup is a great utility, and is well worth the $7 for the pro key, especially if you plan to change roms frequently :D

Xxmen said:
Would the other apps that I downloaded from the Play Store update normally or they would cease to update too?
yup, your playstore apps, and system apps will continue to update and operate normally :) the only thing a custom recovery will prevent you from doing is OTA system updates to your phones software/firmware. :)

I saw somewhere but I cannot remember that you can backup your phone settings like email accounts, phone settings etc and restore in a new rom, maybe I understood it incorrectly, that was when I was opening link after link reading instructions and perhaps confusing myself:D.

Cool, later down can you to assist me with flashing a rom? I downloaded ARHD Sensation 6.6.5.zip and I also have Elegancia ICS Sense 4 build 4.2 zip but I believe the Elegancia is incorrect as my sense version is 3.6

Ok, I have gone all the way and installed/flash the 4Ext Recovery permanently. I tried the CWM recovery with the previous phone and it did not see the PG58IMG.zip but I came accross a post that said that was a know issue and to use the 4Ext instead. The 4Ext installer is an app that does everything without you having to boot the phone in hboot by taking out the battery etc:five:
