Root help - very stupid person

chjones21

Newbie
I don't really understand the workings of phones. I have an htc desire and I like it bar the fact that the space was constantly running out. I looked up what I could do about this and it mentioned rooting the phone with unrevoked.

I managed to do that - as far as I understand it - my phone is now rooted. Now what?

I am very happy with the way the phone looked and felt and worked as it was given to me with the inbuilt htc sense all I would like is more space - so what do I need to do now?

Everyone talks about flashing and mods - they may just as well be talking greek.

Could someone give me a very stupid person's guide to a step by step way of making sure that I have more space on my phone.

Currently I have about 20MBs left. I don't have all that many apps and I do have the option (and use it) of apps2sd but it makes no difference, even though I have asked the apps to be moved to sd and I think they have been, I still only have about 20mbs left in the memory and I have a few more apps I would like to install...

So what next. Do I need to flash? Install something else? Or what do I need to do to free up the space and make sure the whole app moves over to the sd leaving me with free space?

(just to add - I have downloaded something called Titanium from the Market - I do not know what I am supposed to do with this, however. I have never backed-up anything as far as I know and I don't know how one goes about it.... it may seem ridiculous but it is true)

I read part of it so far and the bit which is good is this bit which says rooting will:

Fix the low internal storage problem

That's pretty much all I want it to do - but how? I am rooted and I still have a low internal storage problem...

Perhaps I need to read some more - but if you happen to know off the top of your head what I can do in three easy steps (then that would be great).

I also AM definitely rooted as I have the SuperUser Permissions app that they mention there. So that's a start I guess.

Do I need a ROM? There is all this talk about getting one but considering I just want the extra space - do I need to do that part?

Well I have read some more and I added a different apps2sd option one called superdroidsail or something or other. Using that app to transfer the apps across has now given me 36mbs of space - so that is better.

What about partitioning? What is this? Will this also give me extra space - is it complicated? Do I need to do it?

I think I won't take the option of installing ROMs unless I need to to give extra space.

The titanium app - do I need the phone to be plugged into my computer to do a back up?

I realise these questions may seem absurdly obvious but they are not to me.

Where does it install the backup?
What does it install?
How does you restore? etc. etc. etc.
And do I need to do this?

Thanks for replying Shauny13. Yeah, I read it ..... didn't quite get it but never mind. I don't know whether I need to partition my phone now anyway - I have most of the apps I want and still have 27mbs left on my phone.

I wish it was a simple thing - but it seems a bit complicated and I think I will back off putting the ROM in too, because it says it does a full wipe and as I don't think I am backed up anywhere (and if I am, I wouldn't know where to look for it to restore anyway)... I think I might just leave it for the moment.

It is better than it was - this morning I had only 2.15mbs of space left on my phone and I took quite a few apps off but even so I think I am slightly better off now - having rooted??? I presume so, anyway!

You know what - thinking about it, I don't think I am better off. I uninstalled at least 20mbs worth of extra apps .... so am I back to square one?

F$%^

Last question .... about backing up.

I don't exactly understand what backing up does - I just went into Astro file and it asked me if I wanted to back up my apps so I have said yes and it has backed them up. So what? What can I do with this? When do I ever use it? What is its purpose?

I don't quite get it. I presume that if my app goes wrong - I just redownload it from the Market so what is the backing up about?

If I back up then ........ urgh, I don't get it. I just don't get it, at all.

and I went into Titanium App to see what it does - and I can't see where it moves apps to sd card either ....... aarrrgghhh, I guess I am just grateful that it works like a phone and generally all the apps work too. It may be short on space but - whatever.

Astro just backs up the apk. This is a non rooted solution which is pointless. Yes you can just reinstall from market.

Titanium is different. It backs up all apps and data associated to those apps. Your data cannot be downloaded from the market. For those of us who flash new roms a lot, this tool is invaluable. You can also restore to an older version of an app if you have set up titanium correctly. This is useful if an app is updated on the market and it breaks functionality.

All titanium functions are done from the "Batch" menu. However, what exactly have you done so far to get more space? Perhaps you missed something. You shouldnt really need titanium to move user apps to SD if you did something else...

chjones21 IMO what you need to do is

1. Back up your apps and data with Titanium (menu>batch>backup)
2. Back up your contacts (from contacts menu> export to sd)
3. Back up texts and call logs (you can get apps for these from market)
4. Partition your memory card (follow the memory faq link given my shauny)
5. take a NAND backup from recovery
6. Download the rom from XDA link given by shauny
7. flash your new rom
for 5, 6 and 7 read the rooting faq link given by shaun as well

Hello SURoot and Spikyshotgun

Thank you both for replying.

SU Root so far, in terms of making more space all I have done is delete all my messages and I took some apps off before I did the unrevoked as I only had 2mbs worth of internal memory and wasn't sure that was enough to allow the process to go ahead.

The unrevoked process seemed to work and I am now rooted, I have the superuser permission app mentioned in the guide in my app drawer - since then the only thing I have done is download a slightly different apps2sd app called droidsail super (or similar) which has moved some of my apps to the SD card more fully, I think, than my previous apps2sd. It gave me about 36mbs free - now I am back to 20mbs having downloaded some more apps.

Perhaps I need to partition?
Or get a rom?

The idea of trying to 'partition' something when I don't really know what I am doing slightly fills me with horror - but hey, I rooted so I can partition, I guess!

I really don't want to have to lose everything on my phone but ............... if it really is the only way and will give me the extra space, ugh, yeah why not.

Hey spiky shotgun - I did a bit of the Titanium back up, now I have some still as exclamation marks, some yellow smiley faces, some red smiley faces and some yellow and red smiley faces with an M on them and a couple of ticks (checks if you're American) thrown in as well. Work that out! :-)

I don't know but it makes for a pretty picture.

I'm lost, if you haven't worked that out already ---

hi.
yes it is all a bit confusing at first :-) but you will get there in the end.

you defo need pro version of titanium as it makes the restore process so much
easier.
you can then either do the partition stuff, or do what I've done which is
put a custom hboot on. this frees up internal mem on phone when using a smaller
rom (like SU's dGB11 rom) I find I easily have 165mb free and I'm not even using the
best hboot for it! :-D

good luck

cheers

A2sd+ relies on a partitioned sd card. It's very hard to break an sd card. Go through the a2sd section in the root memory faq mentioned earlier. You will then need a Rom that supports it. If you like standard look and feel, look for teppic74s rooted stock gingerbread and a2sd add on.

Also go through the rooting faq as it teaches you how to flash things such as roms and add ons
