Help Help! Water Damage!

Lurker
I dropped my phone in the toilet. I took it apart and dried it with a towel. Everything on the phone is working fine, except for the sound. The phone is sensing that the earphones are plugged in when they are not. The sound is fine through the earphones. I've tried plugging the earphones in and out and also blowing on the earphone jack in case there is water in there. Nothing has helped. The phone still thinks that the earphones are plugged in. Just to clarify, the earphones were not plugged in when the phone fell in the water.

Has anyone else had this issue after water damage?

How long ago did it happen? The best you can do is turn it off and let it dry. Sometimes after a few days the problems can solve themselves. A turned on phone while it is still wet, can damage it even more.

It happened about a half hour ago.

I've tried using a hairdryer on the earphone jack. The sound is now back to working. However, if I plug the earphones in and take them out, the sound stops working again. I then need to use the hairdryer on the earphone jack again to restore the sound.

I've just turned the phone off. I'm going to leave it a while and see if that helps.

that's the best you can do, just leave it off for at least 24 hours.

Welcome karen25!
As nieltab says, a device turned on soon after getting wet like yours did may damage it even more.
Take out the battery, sd card, sim card and
Put it in a bag of uncooked rice for a few days. :)

Uncooked rice will work, but be warned unless the phone is thoroughly dry immediately corrosion may set in. I have a good friend who repairs phones (very handy), and he advises that a water damaged phone should be stripped down and have a special bath of isopropyl alcohol, be thoroughly cleaned and dried and reassembled. Phones that appear to work fine after a thorougher dry only tend to start playing up at a later date, often months later.

Sorry to be the harbinger of doom, but a phone that has received a dunking is a "poorly" phone, I know twice from bitter experience.

Cooked rice is not going to help in any way, the whole idea behind sealing a water damaged device in a container with dry, uncooked rice is that it will absorb moisture. Cooked rice is already hydrated, it needs to be uncooked.

Why the hell did I say cooked! You are quite right Ed Vim, I have amended my post and should read my posts before sending them.

It was so simple to fit all you had to do was take off the battery cover unscrew all the screws then at the top where the headphone jack is unclip the tiny blue ribbon cable then once you have done that just do the same again but in reverse with the new part.
