Help help water damaged s5 active first day!

Lurker
Just bought it and put it in a glass of water to test water resistance but I neglected one clip on the back. The battery indicator shows water damage on the sticker but there's a second water damage sensor sticker that's still white! I put it in rice over night n it turns on but no screen image displays. I hear text so it's working fine still. I went to the store and was told I can buy another with insurance for another 200! I just bought it yesterday! Can I buy a new batter n replace It by manufacturer warranty cus only batter shows water damage and they won't take It back. Someone please help me!

I believe Samsung replaces the first one for free of there was a manufacturer defect - however, this isn't the case here.

Just because its water resistant doesn't mean you should test it!

Unfortunately, this gets chalked up to user error, just like a cracked screen, and you'll probably have to pay up.

I keep reading of folks like you who just insist they must dunk their brand new phone under water.

it is fool hardy and fraught with a large potential for damaging a darn good phone.

Why should you expect anyone to warranty out something that you purposely damaged?

Buy a new battery and then try to get it exchanged, but I expect you are out $200 minimum.

part of the main reason people are buying this phone is because it IS water resistant up to 3 feet for 30 minutes. that meas the phone should be able to withstand that treatment. we shouldent be getting on anyone for doing so, thats part of the reason for buying this thing. so i would have to say he did not "purposely damaged" his phone, he was just doing what his phone claims it should do. however not completely closing the back that just sucks and is his fault. now if i did have the back closed properly and dipped mine in the pool on day one and it got messed up i would just return it to the store that i bought it from for a refund or replacement!

but i do slightly agree with you, that waterproof rating is part of the reason i bought this phone however there is just something in me that wont let me put my $600 phone in the pool even though it says i can. :hmmmm:

Just because you buy a new car and it has a particular safety rating and can withstand impacts of such and such... you're not going to purposely get into a car accident to test that theory... why do the same with a phone.

ya but if that same vehicle boasts about being a 4x4 with a 24inch clearance, than what you're saying is i should never take it off the cement/pavement because i might get a flat or break an axle!

or why would one by a camera that is waterproof but not take an under water shot?

i do understand that $600 is a lot of money, that's why i haven't done it myself. but besides the money whats the difference between our $600 phone/camera and a disposable $20 camera that both boast the same specs?

what one wants to do with their phone is up to them and if Samsung advertises it is waterproof and it fails that to me sounds like they should have never advertised it or promptly replace it or expect false advertisement suets, as long as its not user error such as not putting the back cover on correctly

I have submerged mine in water 6-8 times now with no issues... It is literally one of the first things I did within the first hour of receiving it!! As long as it is sealed PROPERLY, it is MANUFACTURED to resist water up to 1 meter for 30 mins. That is ONE of the selling points! If it doesn't, that is a MANUFACTURERS defect, covered by warranty in my eyes. Smithe058 is correct... if they say it'll do something, it should. That is even true for the software and hardware... if it overheats cuz you used it too much, should you have not used it that much?

You should try directly with Samsung, who knows what they'll say. My sister had the S4, new, dropped it and the outer screen didn't crack, but something inside, caused video issues with the screen, sent it to Samsung (the whole time, me claiming they won't do anything under warranty, as they'll be able to tell you dropped it) and sure enough, they fixed it, replaced the whole screen, etc and sent it back, free of charge.

We can all be armchair lawyers at times, but in situations like this, rather than get all worked up about something that might or might not happen, I've found it's best just to call and ask. What's the worst that can happen? They say "no"?

Most of the time manufacturers can be pretty reasonable *gasp*.

Seeing as how the active line of phones is advertised to survive getting dunked and yours didn't (either accidental or deliberate) they might just replace it for you no questions asked.

Give them a call, then you'll know and you can either sing their praises or curse them from here to Pawtucket. :D
