Help Help with android saving history.

I am running kitkat on my Acer, is there a way that i can make it stop saving my activity?
Im tired of everything i do and everywhere i go it keeps it in the history in the rectangular button right of the home button.
Then you have to press and hold each item to remove from list.

That's the recent apps list, and is there to let you take full advantage of Android's multi-tasking e.g. quickly switch back to an app you were using previously and resume where you left off.

It's probably possible to disable it, but if so it would require rooting the device and modifying system files.
