This post should explain quite a bit:

Tap the back button to leave/close an app. Android manages the system quite well, so there's no need for much work on your part.

I use a few things:

Lock Screen App to turn the screen off as it goes in my pocket
Screen Filter to keep the screen at 50% unless I’m out in the sun
JuiceDefender Plus to automatically turn unused services off
Fast Reboot to turn stuff off although I know I shouldn’t

I ignore running services. I’ve noticed that if I don’t use the phone, it’ll last a couple days, but as soon as I start using it...

Main battery hogs are:

1 - Screen
2 - Processor
3 - Radios (3/4G LTE, Wifi, bluetooth, GPS)

There's not really much that can be done about the first two, besides reducing the brightness and using less intense apps, but again, why did you buy a smartphone for? :)

About the third, you can always keep those disabled and enable them prior to using. Wifi uses almost no power if the signal is strong.
