Help Help with my new Captivate!

Hey guys, I picked up a Captivate today for $200 on Craigslist and I had a few questions. It seems like someone tried to unlock this phone because whenever it starts up it says Samsung Vibrant and T-Mobile. Another thing is, my 3G internet isnt working. Do you think this is because im coming from a blackberry or its something wrong with the phone? I'm going to call AT&T in the morning and ask. Also, when i press the back button it takes me home, and when i push the home button it takes me back. Lastly, when i push up on the volume rocker, the volume goes down and vice versa! Is there anyway I can just reset everything on the phone and even the attempted unlock?!

Buyer beware when buying used phones off eBay/CraigsList.
 
Its still not working :( I tried to download that Odin and it doesnt really open up anything and when i go into download mode, theres no option to start. Is there any other version of that Odin, so i can reset my phone? I tried it on Mac first, im about to try it on my brothers PC.
 
Make sure your phone is off open odin plug in the usb and immediately press both volume rockers. It should then read com 3 or 4 or something and hit start.
 
I put on USB debugging and I still get <OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 0)

Is this the screen I'm supposed to be at?

Android system recovery <2e>

Samsung Recovery Utils

reboot system now
reinstall packages
delete all suer data
delete cache data

then it has a bunch of stuff text in yellow below it.

No
you just want to shut your phone off hold the volume rockers and plug in don't use the three button combo
 
Thank you! I no longer get the tmobile or vibrant screen! However, my reception is still pretty terrible... Is this just hte phone? Sometimes I get one bar sometiems all the bars will be gray, and sometimes it will have none.
 
Cool remember to use odin to masterwipe

With the phone on, usb debugging still enabled, just click master clear, after it restarts go into your settings and select privacy and do a factory reset, it should run perfect after that.

What do I need to masterwipe for? Will it help the reception!?! :confused:

Reception? doubt it, but it will clean up the phone nicely and a factory reset is just for good measure. Your modem is the one that would come with the phone at this point are you in a bad AT&T area?

Also install samsung Kies on your pc

upgrade to Jh7 if kies finds conflicts it may say eror just keep trying, after a few attempts it will tll you hold the volume rockers and then it will reflash your phone and fix anything that aint perfect.

Remove your sim card.
