Root Help with newly rooted EVO

BenChase7

Android Expert
Hey guys, I finallly rooted my EVO... used unrevoked3 and it made it very simple. The main reason I rooted was to have access to the WiFi tethering and (eventually) run a custom ROM.

Now that (I think) I'm rooted, I still cannot tether. I still get the error 76 on the phone and my laptop finds my EVO just fine, but says "no internet access."

Any Ideas? What have I missed?

Thanks in advance! :)

There are several custom ROMs that allow you to use the built in sprint hotspot app. It basically just unlocks it. In my opinion, though, android wifi tether is better, and, of course, works on any ROM.

Thanks, thats the one I ended up downloading. any recommendations for overclocking the CPU? Do they require a custom ROM?

You'll need a custom kernel to overclock. While you can disable perflock for HTC kernels, you can only underclock, or raise the minimum. With almost any custom kernel, you can raise the max higher than 998.

You might try flashing Fresh as your first rom. It has the tether app built in and is a good stable rom to start with. Be sure to use Amon Ra as your standard recovery and back up your keys. Remember to always , always make a nandroid backup before flashing anything. They wind up taking up quite a lot of space on your sd card and before long you're getting a 'out of space' notification. They don't have to be kept on your sd card. Just move them to your pc's hard drive until you need them then move the one you want back into the proper folder (the one you took it out of obviously) so Ra can find it. Also sync your apps with appbrain so you can restore them because when you install a new rom. I, personally, recommend a full wipe(plus cache, plus Dalvik) which erases your sd contents. Also before flashing a new rom back up the entire sd card to your pc's hard drive. If you're using launcher pro back up your settings (menu/preferences/backup homescreens) to make it easier to restore after flashing.

What did I leave out?

Great advice... Thanks!

Hope to flash a ROM this weekend. My only concern is will I lose my ability to use the 4G radio? (Since I like to tether, 4G is nice.)

ok, so there's no way to run the sprint hotspot on the stock rom? That's the only thing i want on my phone.

I thought android wifi tether was only 3g. If it's 4g then i guess it would be ok for me.

OP, any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

I don't think the hotspot hack is a flashable zip but I might be wrong. you might have to flash a custom rom to get the hotspot to work otherwise wifi tether is your only choice and I am not sure if that supports 4g or not. I have no 4g by me to test it.

It's the other way around, the unlocked sprint hotspot is ONLY 3g, and wifi tether is 4g if you're in a 4g area and have it turned on.

Here's a good read to bring you up to speed with what's what:

Just remember, android wifi tether will work on any ROM with both 3g/4g. Spring hotspot has only been unlocked on certain custom ROM, and when it is, it only works with 3g.
