Help with rom backup?

Hi,I want to edit the vold.fstab file to switch internal storage with the bigger external one but I have to do a backup. I've heard the best option is CWM recovery but I don't know how I've read some tutorials but they don't answer some of my questions.
Like,if my internal space is 800mb and internal sd is 1.75GB,will the backup fit in one of them? And,what are the buttons combination to get in CWM menu if my phone won't boot? Also,where can I get the app? Please help?

What phone do you have? Are you rooted?
If you're not rooted, one of the best ways to create a backup is to use the app, Helium:

Yes,it's rooted and it's an Overmax Vertis Plus,only now I saw that CWM is incompatible with my phone. About Helium,I want to backup my android OS not the apps,but I found a way withAndroid developer tools,I'll try it.
