Root Help with Root on EVO!!!!

Lurker
So I'm trying to root my Evo with hboot 2.18. I've never rooted a phone before and after doing a little research I found out I need to go to the HTC unlock bootloader website. So I registered and followed the directions. My issue is that I have a Mac running osx and the instructions seem to be exclusively for windows...(they mention the fastboot download thing for mac but thats about it). So I kinda got scared and stopped. So I'm just wondering if the process is the same for a mac...maybe the answer is really obvious and I'm just too stupid to figure it out. Also...is this even the right way to root the phone or am I missing something completely...haha, Any help will be appreciated :)

As far as I know, yes, you can use a mac...I use/used windows for it but I have heard no issues from mac users.
All you are needing to use it for is the unlock token, so if something does go awry, it can be done again with no ill effects...:)

Thanks for the response :) I'm also supposed to use "all other supported devices" right? My issue is when the instructions say to go to Start>run>cmd and then command prompt fastboot oem get_identifier_token...i'm not sure how to do this on a osx.

So when I get the unlock token...is the phone rooted or are there more steps I need to take?

See this guide....
As far as the command prompts on a mac, I'm sorry, I do not know.:(
(my wife does, as she uses a mac but shes at home)
You are on the first step towards root.
See that guide I linked and you will see:)
And yes, all other supported devices.....

That's the guide I used! I'm completely lost as to what to do next after I follow the htc unlock bootloader..
"1.go to HTCdev and follow directions to get your bootloader unlocked
2.install custom recovery
3.flash the su file or you can flash a rom of your choice"

So I'm doing step 1..
How do I install custom recover?
What i s-on?

haha sorry I'm usually pretty tech savvy but all of this seems so unorganized and goes way over my head, thanks for the help though :)!

No problem,
yes, once you unlock your bootloader, you will need to install a custom recovery via the 3 ways listed....the easiest way for me was the PC36IMG method.
Then you need to either flash the superuser (su) if you want to stay on your current rom, or if you want a custom rom (I recommend MikG), that will come with superuser already.
You will still be s-on and that o.k. for now.
If You want s-off you can follow the Capt method later, which will allow you to flash radios, and other things thru bootloader (hboot).
Most people just stay s-on to flash roms/kernels etc and thats o.k.
Until you get more familiar with Android etc, I would recommend not goint s-off for now....
If you have anymore questions, do not hesitate to ask, I/we will be here.

as far as the command prompt issue...I think osx comes with darwin which I think is the mac version or cmd.exe in windows.
that part shouldn't worry you though...you aren't doing anything that can brick your phone. it will either spit the code out or it won't.

As a recent rooter I can say you will be please once you get all done and if you use mikG 3.11. its like having a whole new phone...( I know, I know you guys are probably tired of me repeating that every chance I get)

Hey, you can repeat cuz it's true, and every rom that I flash, it's like a new phone!!!
You speak the truth:p

Thanks for being so helpful! So "3.transfer the file to the root (that means not in any folder) of the sd card." that means just copy past the file into the phone and not into any specific folder (music, pictures, etc)?

I really just want to root so I can delete the bloatware apps that came with the phone, once I'm comfortable with this whole process i'll move on to flashing roms and stuff haha

Is mikG 3.11 some kind of custom os?

I'm sure I'm not qualified to answer that question but...mikG is a rom that will keep your phone feeling stock ish but add a lot of great tweaks and customization options. it also doesn't load all the bloatware that you got before. it has a great sense overlay that you are going to love once you start messing with the lock screen options and such. if you go as far as getting unlocked then the rest of it is super easy...I agree the getting unlocked part is a bit confusing to read through. after that the steps all work just like the guide says.

Trust me ...you want to root to get mikG not just get rid of bloatware! ;)

So it basically tweaks the already existing Sense UI? Does it slow down the phone at all? Does it get rid of the bloatware in the process? I really just want the phone to run as smooth as possible.

my bloatware is gone...the phone is faster than ever...I'm not promising perfection as it has it quirks...but I expect those to settle out too. I'm on my second evo in 2 weeks since I broke (physically) my other on Sunday and had to start over.

I would say it's pretty smooth though!

Ohh okay I just looked at a youtube video of it, it looks pretty sweet! If I stay on stock is it easy to flash that/any other rom onto my phone at a later time? Also speaking of bloatware, if I stay on stock how do I delete all of those apps? It's not as simple as uninstalling them as you would any other app...is it?
