Help with tasker profile for caller announce

Blake999

Lurker
Hello i have setup a profile to say caller name when bluetooth connected but having trouble with getting it to repeat untill answered or rejected or caller stops. Googled and read numerous posts on this task but having trouble understanding all the terminology ie variables goto do maths etc etc just would like in real simple terms what to setup and step by step instructions. Im ok with basic events tasks and such but struggle when things go deeper. Not sure if ring volume could be lowered at same time also.

Hi Blake999, and welcome to Android Forums :D

I'm usually pretty quick to respond to Tasker support questions, but I've been struggling with how best to assist you. I know you say that you've looked at some examples, but here is one that I think may be able to help you out:

The next 3 profiles work together since the first of these cannot have an exit task.

Profile: Announce Caller

What it does: Announces the name (if in contact list) or number of caller when at home AND awake.

When it kicks on: When the phone is ringing.

Context
01. Event -> Phone -> Phone Ringing

Entry Task Name: Announce Caller Name
01. Variable -> Variable Set -> %Ringing To 1
02. Task -> If -> %atHome = 1
03. Task -> If -> %sleepOrAwake = 0
04. Task -> If -> %CNAME Is Set //i.e. caller exists in phonebook
05. Misc -> Say -> "Call from %CNAME"
06. Task -> Else
07. Misc -> Say -> "Call from %CNUM"
08. Task -> End If
09. Task -> End If
10. Task -> End If

Profile: Call Answered

What it does: To re-set the variable %Ringing, used above, to zero.

When it kicks on: When the call is answered.

Context
01. Event -> Phone -> Phone Offhook

Entry Task Name: CallFinished Value
01. Variable -> Variable Set -> %Ringing To 0

Profile: Phone Idle

What it does: To re-set the variable %Ringing, used above, to zero.

When it kicks in: When the call is not answered (missed call).

Context
01. Event -> Phone -> Phone Idle

Entry Task Name: CallFinished Value
01. Variable -> Variable Set -> %Ringing To 0

I found this in the fantastic What Tasker profiles is everyone using?? thread, which I highly recommend that you skim through when you have the time. :thumbup:

Hopefully that can at least get you pointed in the right direction; if you're stuck or confused on a few of the steps, feel free to ask specific questions and I'll be able to help you out. :)

Once again, welcome aboard! :ciao:

Can get it to work ok but it just wont repeat name. Even if i do a simple one using a goto task after the say task.
Ie
1 say cname etc
2 goto action number 1

Tried with setting variable %phoneringing and incoming call and not setting but still only says name once. Pulling whats left of my hair out.

I haven't tested, but you may want to add in something like this:

<!-- SNIP! -->
04. Task -> If -> %CNAME Is Set //i.e. caller exists in phonebook
05. Misc -> Say -> "Call from %CNAME"
06. Task -> Wait -> 5 seconds
07. Task -> Goto -> Task 05 IF Variable "%Ringing" Is Set
08. Task -> Else
<!-- SNIP! -->

BTW, note that capitalization is important with variable names in Tasker. %ringing and %Ringing and %RINGING and %RiNgInG are all different variables. The capitalization also defines the visibility of a variable. Variables which include at least one capital letter (%RINGING, %Ringing, %RiNgInG) are Global, which means that their value can be seen and used within any task or profile. Variables in all lower-case (%ringing, %phoneringing) are Local variables and are only accessibly within that specific task. You can't set %phoneringing with one profile and then reference it from another. You'd want to use %PhoneRinging or some other variation instead.
