I followed the temporary root instructions using kingroot. my phone shut down and restarted, now it is setting on the MetroPCS (riding on the nationwide t-mobile network) screen and has not booted for about 15 minutes.

should i force power it down and try to restart it or should i continue waiting?

Try and force restart it.. King root can't brick your phone

I read that there is a newer, English language version of kingroot that works much better. I think I'll restore my unrooted 100% stock backup and see how well it works.
Edit: I restored my stock unrooted backup, did a factory reset, and then installed the new kingroot apk and let it run.
Good news: It worked and gave me temp root the first time without any problems.
Bad news: It failed the next 2 times and caused several google apps to start force closing.

That sums up my experience with KingRoot. It took a while but the first time it worked, I got force close errors and I thought I really screwed something up. But after a reboot it fixed it, and KingRoot worked the first time.

this is the problem i had the first time tried with the not-English version. i finally got root and installed the custom recovery and butternoob rom

It took me acouple hours to get it to work then I had issues flashing twrp kept saying I wasn't rooted. Then I tried something and I factory set my phone and then ran the kingroot, it finally did it after only 2 tries. Then flashed superuser then uninstalled all kingroot stuff and now I'm full rooted and running cm12.1

You can use "Partitions Backup & Restore" by Wanam to make these backups if you don't know how to use Terminal Emulator or ADB Shell. It will make a backup of every partition on your phone. You can get it from the Play Store for free.
