i just got the optimus slider from virgin mobile. this is my first smartphone, i really don't even know how to use a computer, all i've ever done is look things up online now n then, took me 20 mins to figure out how to write this.. i feel like an 80 year old lady, i have no idea what any of it means i'm lost in all these terms, what's widgit, sync, shortcuts, should i use wi-fi, can i get rid of apps i'll never use, how do i get music??? i'm completely lost and the book tells me nothing. is it hopeless

?
No, not hopeless at all, but it does sound like you may want to learn to use Google so you can start learning about this stuff! Here are some short definitions for you, followed by some pointers:
Widget - A widget is just a small app that can be ran inside of another app. For example a clock widget, where it is just an image of a digital clock changing with the time, could be used within a larger calendar app.
Sync - Short for Synchronize, and means just that. Say the calendar mentioned above is linked to the calendar in your e-mail -- they could automatically Sync together so that you only had to update one for the other to have the same calendar information.
Shortcuts - A shortcut is just a visual image that links to the actual app that it opens. All it does is give you a "shortcut" to the app so that you don't have to go searching for it.
WiFi - This is a semi-generalized term that means access to the internet without using the phone's satellite system. Technically it refers to a wireless access point, which is just a little box that broadcasts a short-range signal that your phone can receive and connect to. And, yes, you want to use WiFi as much as possible to keep from burning up precious data-time on your cell phone plan... but just remember, WiFi isn't everywhere, so you can't use it all the time.
To answer your questions: Yes, you can get rid of any apps you'll never use without hurting anything, but really you don't have to unless you run out of space to save new apps you will be using. You can get music a whole lot of ways - there are apps that allow you to purchase music to listen to, and you can get apps that stream radio through your phone. You can also load music from your computer onto the phone, but this isn't quite as easy without help.
Some pointers: If you aren't sure what something means. Get on the internet (open your browser) and go to
www.google.com -- then just type in something like "What does WiFi mean?", Click Search or press Enter and click a link that comes up. Something very useful is Wikipedia, which should come up for almost any question like this that you type in.
Another thing you could try is going to a store like Verizon or AT&T (whichever your phone's carrier is) and ask them questions. They are there to help with things like this and can be very informative.
Well, I hope that gets you started on your way to learning, good luck!
