That's because the "so called" SIM card slot isn't intended for the use of SIM cards. That slot is intended for a card that runs the 4glte. If you removed that card (I believe uicc it's called) than you ruined your 4G access. You need to go to a corporate metro store and have them replace it and reconfigure your device so it can run 4g again, which may or may not cost you some dollars.
In addition: you could always just use the Wi-Fi option to surf if that's possibility.
