Is it an AT&T phone? Put the card in. Is it a T-Mobile phone? Buy an unlock code for it, then put the card in and unlock it (it'll ask you for the code).
Is it a Verizon or Sprint phone? Give the phone back - the person still owes you the money, since you can't use the phone on AT&T.
