It was sarcasm lol
I know. Should I try the new sim card? Maybe an account transfer will get the LTE job done.

It's possible.
May try it when I feel like spending 7 bucks. Lol
The old sim cards are not capable of receiving lte. The ninth and tenth digits of an at&t compatible sim must be 25 or higher for lte, and it would be provisioned on the tfdata apn.Well, just to try I had a new ST micro SIM and my mom wanted to use my mega and I transferred online and LTE came on automatically. No clue why but it did.

If you have one of the cards from before they stopped selling them, it isn't capable of receiving lte. I just ordered a new one.

Bottom line: If you are using the BYOP (Bring your own phone program), you can't use LTE...
My conversation with StraightTalk support today: Changed name of support person to protect identity.
Me: How do I enable the LTE network on my LTE capable phone. I currently only get the HSDPA+ speeds (6 Mbps) on my phone. I am an existing "Bring your own phone" customer of straight talk.
Support: Hi XXXXXX. Thank you for visiting Straight Talk Wireless.
Me: Hi YYYYYY, Thanks. I hope you can help me out
Support: You are welcome.
Support: Please be informed that BYOP program does not support LTE technology phones from another company.
Support: Is xxx-xxx-xxxx your phone number?
Me: yes, that's my number
Me: So do I have to use a phone sold by straight talk to use LTE?
Support: Okay.
Support: Yes, you have that as an option.
Me: OK. So if I stick with my phone, I can't use LTE.
Me: Hmm, I wish the website made that clearer
Support: No. Our BYOP program does not support LTE technology phones.
Me: I see
Support: Yes.
Me: OK. Thanks for the clarification.

If you speak to someone else in their customer service or byod department you will get a completely different answer. Unfortunately, that is how they operate. The last person I spoke with in their byod department told me that he activated LTE for my account after asking me what phone I used. i717 Galaxy Note. Mine is still not working. Some people are reporting success after ordering a new sim or changing APN settings.
Note: I still have the old AT&T sim. I know OP had success. Did he have a new SIM card?
You're right. I just did some more checking, and they started issuing the newer series sims sometime before they stopped selling them.I have two cards that were old (6+ months) and when I called they set them up.
How much trouble is it to change SIM cards? do I have to talk to the awful ST reps again, or is the changeover online? Also, do I loose a partial month, or is the sim seperate from the billing side of things?
I spent some time on the phone with ST and they couldn't/wouldn't enable LTE; I'm wondering if its dependent on what model phone you tell them you have? Perhaps if you tell them you have a more modern phone that didn't exist before they updated to LTE? ie Galaxy S4, or LG G2 or something...
I have a note, and they still gave me the old att.mvno apn settings.
Thanks, Josh
I should have done that also but I had already ordered a new sim before I realized I had a compatible one. I'll just wait for the new micro sim and not bother cutting down this one. It's very easy just go in and click transfer service and enter your SIM and select the phone and done

This was when at&t first started deploying lte. Don't remember if it was on xda or hofo that someone who worked for at&t poated the information. There is some config data required on the sim card that doesn't exist in the older cards.Where did you hear about the 23 vs 25 digits, and 23 not being capable of LTE? I just checked my SIM and I have 23.
Thanks

Most, if not all, ST at&t sims start with 89014103. The next two digits are the ones to look for. Below 25 and the sim isn't capable of receiving lte.
