you can alter the icons in the bottom row by opening the app drawer then pressing menu>edit.
to connect your gs2 to your pc you need to install kies. unfortunately this is extremely hit+miss
To upgrade firmware you will need to connect it via usb. at least initially, as you can root your phone and after that point it is possible to upgrade via the internal sdcard using CWM by booting up in recovery mode

im using windows 7 x64 and have no problem connecting it.. have u installed Kies (from the samsung site) and installed drivers?

updating via Odin is the best way to update ur phone's firmware.. and to do this, u need a usb connection yes..

im not sure wat u mean by the bottom part of the screen, but if ur talking about the app dock, there are alternative launchers that u could try.. Go launcher is one of the best, i hear.. and launcherpro..there are quitea few other good ones that u might wanna try out urself

btw. battery life is pretty impressive once u update to a new official firmware (anything newer than KG5 is great)
