I’m new to this forum. I've had my Galaxy S3 for a few months now and I love it. Has to be the best phone made to date. Ive had a few others and this one by far is so much better than all the other phones I’ve had. I never had an i-phone, but my friend has one and he loves my phone. So that being said, the S3 is a great phone.

Now I just got the 4.1.1 jelly bean update from T-mobile USA ( I’m in CA ) and the download went fine. My only complaint is that I didn’t realize all my settings, favs, games and game progress, apps get wiped clean. You end up starting from step one again like a new phone. Did I make a mistake when I did the 4.1.1? The Kies software on my pc gave me the option to back up info, but I didn’t do it. I know you might say duh, but I really didn’t need to back up music, contacts etc. And if i remember right it never tells you what you can back up. I keep all my music and contacts on my pc, so that took 3 minutes to restore.

When you do the install it never says you will lose all your stuff. Am I crazy and did something wrong? I mean really they cant make the new install save your log ins and apps games etc? Im really mad that my Angry Birds Star Wars was not saved, i was half way through it,, ugh ... ;-(

Anyway the new jelly bean update is cool, some new features etc. Worth doing I guess, but just be prepared to start your phone off from scratch.

Patrick,

I guess maybe it factory reset your device when the update occurred, usually it doesn't do that, strange that it did, usually it makes you do it yourself..

Sorry to hear about your loss of data :(

Ya sucks, but it only took me a few hours to get it back to my specs.

Can i ask you another question. please.

All the apps that run in the background, if i force stop them, to save battery life and memory, you get that "if you stop this it may cause problems" message. Will it really hurt to do that. I dont use half the apps that are running. And will the force stop always stop the apps. or will they restart the next time i restart my phone?

thanks

First the apps aren't "run"ing in the background. They are just loaded in memory for quick access. Force closing them will save you no battery power and, in fact, may cost you battery if the OS then spends time re-opening them.

Just ignore all that stuff and let the OS handle it on it's own.

Just gave someone else the same advice earlier today- think of it like your PC...unless an application is misbehaving, let the OS determine if it needs to kill a process.

ok thanks for clearing that up. ill leave alone...

Too bad- they should be more clear about the possibility of losing data. I guess the moral of the story is: when in doubt, say yes to the backup!

It kinda doesn't surprise me if it does an automatic reset- you really should if you are moving to a new version of Android. In my dark past of flashing ROMs regularly, pretty terrible issues can pop up if you don't wipe & format the system/data/cache partitions prior to flashing a different ROM.

thanks for the info, about what i was thinking, but it does suck to lose stuff.

would my update gone any different had i done it OTA on my phone? I used the Kies on my PC to update it.

Doing it OTA right now- installed & rebooted by itself & now "optimizing apps".

Just finished booting & so far all seems well, still have all my apps, data & settings as far as I can tell...will let you know more as I dig in a little deeper.

Everything seems to have been carried over ok! Now to mess around with Google Now. :)

Still don't know why Kies via computer would require a reset while OTA wouldn't. Pretty strange...

had i known i would have done the OTA, but from what i read it made it seem like the PC KIES way was faster and safer. oh well live an learn.

what do you like about google now?
