Im new member of here and i just want to say hi along with my brand new samsung epic 4G!

Hey Touchyface1,
I hope you enjoy your new Epic 4g phone. It seems to be a mixed consensus on whether or not it was a good choice. Some love it, some hate it, some don't have much of an opinion. My personal experience has been horrible in that I've gone through 5 phones in like 30 days with terrible customer support which really shocked me. I've been with Sprint since the big hype was "Push to Talk" and they were just Nextel. They've always been good to me and I've always had great service with their phones and staff. Things seem to have changed since the days I moved over to the Samsung Instinct which was totally abandoned and finally I recently upgraded to the Epic 4g. Personally I wish I would have waited a matter of weeks because the Epic 4G Touch came out which if I had known would have went for that one instead.

I gave up on Sprint and luckily found places like this where I could do my own research and find ways to make the phone perform better. I haven't taken the "root" route but if things don't get to where they should be I might consider it but then again, rooting has its own problems as well. I wish they would just upgrade us to Gingerbread already. I think that would fix many of the issues a lot of people are complaining about. For me right now, its the lack of speed, battery life and constant problems with the SD Card showing all the files during a reboot/restart. I have to constantly cycle it off and on until all of the files show up. I thought it might be the card in the beginning but I was noticing it with all 5 phones I went through.

Don't get me wrong, when this phone works its a fantastic phone I just wish they would have given it 1GB of actual internal memory instead of 512mg. It runs out very fast since you can't always push everything to the SD Card and from what I've noticed even though you push apps to the card, its not really 100%. It seems to move portions of the file over which you will discover simply by moving a large file to the card, check your memory numbers both card and internal memory and then remove it. It actually took me a while to catch on to that but now that I understand that I've been able to work things out where I try to keep at least 100+mg of free memory otherwise it starts getting a little sluggish.

I am also new to the Epic, actually to Android and Smartphones since I can't consider the Instinct a Smartphone. I think if they would have added the physical keyboard to the Epic 4G Touch it would have been a perfect solution for me which is why I'm a little upset with my choice and not doing more research.

While I agree with your first statement, your second one is complete BS. There are a ton of people that do not root their phones who come here for advice and help for their phone. This is still an excellent place for information about the Epic (rooted or not).

PC Jona and -Jay-, that's my next move except I seem to be having a hard time with the computer end of things. I haven't had a lot of time to do some real in-depth checking but from what I've seen so far , me, bein a Mac person running OS X 10.4.1 -Tiger- I have only seen one or two posts on running of course one step above being 10.5 and even that person was telling about how he was not able to completely get it done. I seriously wish I knew how to program. I would love to create a simple 1 push button (root for dummies, author included) and as well a 1 push button (unroot for dummies). Have a folder and again with a single button, drop in whichever ROM you want to try out, hit the button and play away with your new phone, running the way it should run straight out of the factory without all the bloatware, junk and all other garbage that's made all 3 of my Epic's not work properly. Hopefully some day soon someone will or possibly is already working on one as we speak. I know things have gotten better since some developer's have created "oneclick" and "Z4Root" but I still have the roadblock of needing to use a computer to finish the pricess once y phone gets rooted. What might even be nicer would be able to just do everything right from your SD Card and be done with it. Just like changing home launchers. Any help in the right direction would be appreciated.

Hey Touchyface1, if you have any questions regarding an unrooted phone, don't hesitate to ask and I and just about everyone else here is normally generous enough to give you not only good advice but many options. That's the great thing about cool forums like these. Well, I'm going to see what I can do to figure out the best and easiest way to root my phone. I'm tired of lack of any help or conern from Samsung and Sprint's "Well, lets see, you purchased the phone, we've received your monthly payment.... hmmm, have we forgotten anything? Uh, well, er, uh no. We're good! And hang up on you before you can get a word out. I'm really disappointed with Sprint's service over the last few years, but one way or another I'm going to get the Epic 4G Touch, Motorola Photon 4G Epic or I'll just finally get me an iPhone since they now carry it.

Don't pay any attention to his statement Touchyface1. Some people just like to spread nonsense. Personally I think rooting should be done only if you have a phone that isn't working to your satisfaction. Of course there's always the reason just because you like to tinker and do other modifications. If you're phone is working fine and you're not a tinkerer then there really isn't a reason to root. Rooting can be very frustrating I don't care what anyone says. Go through these forums and see how many people end up getting stuck and having trouble getting their phones to root. The chances of seriously bricking your phone is smaller than some think but just because you root your phone doesn't mean you'll have a perfect phone. A rooted phone usually has their own set of problems but typically a good rooted phone can give you a phone which performs much better than a troublesome unrooted phone.

The only reason I haven't rooted my phone as much as I complain about it is that there is very little support for Mac users and the "Root without a computer" or the true "One click rooting" just isn't there. I put no blame on the developers who create these apps. They work very hard at helping the public have good working rooted phones. The problem is there are so many phones out there, different OS versions and the phones even though it may be the same model/brand don't seem to be consistent. I watched a video of qbking77 using an app that allowed him to root his phone without a computer. I followed the instructions to the "T" and it wouldn't work for my phone and also for a lot of others phones who also tried that method. I've seen a lot of people sucessfully root their phones using z4Root while others could not. The point is, just because you have a PC doesn't mean rooting is going to be easy even though you'll see many posts saying how easy and perfect it worked. If you keep reading more posts you'll see just as many complaining about how they are stuck and can't root their phones. I'm actually jealous of those who have been able to root their phones but I'm also glad their one of the lucky ones who has been able to do so without issues. I'm still hoping someone will create another true working "One click, root without a computer" app so I can join in on the fun since my phone since I've had it has not been working correctly. Until then I just sit here and drool, daydream and hope when I grow up I will have a rooted phone.

Try starting here. You will be sent to the XDA forums where a lot of devs hang out. qbking77 made a bunch of video so this way you can see what you would be getting yourself into and there are a lot of different options to choose from. But, its a good place to start. While you're over there browse around and you'll see a lot of other options if you just read some of the posts and see what others are saying.
