Hide Folders in Gallery

I'm running ICS on my Galaxy S3. I've been sorting out my photos and getting them organized on my phone. When I view the Gallery, I get some extra folders that I think might be part of some apps. Since there are images in the folders, they show up in my Gallery app. I'm afraid to delete the images in case they are needed for an app.

My question is, "Is there any way to tell Gallery not to display the images in certain folders?" I'd love to get rid of these extra folders in my Gallery view. Thanks.
 
If your stock gallery hasn't the option to hide folders you might have a look at QuickPic, free in Play Store :)

I don't use apps to hide pictures. I put a . preceding the directory (folder) name. The . tells the OS that the directory is hidden.
If the app needs those pics, hiding the directory also hides them from the app.
For instance, I use go sms and I have custom background pics, if I hide them from the gallery, go sms can't see them and uses a blank background.
 
Create an empty file called ".nomedia" and place it in the root of the directories you don't want to show up in the gallery. The apps should still be able to use the images.
 
Quickpic will allow you to long press on a folder, then choose hide. This will create a .nomedia file for you. Or, if you just want to hide the folder from Quickpic but not that stock gallery, long press the folder and choose exclude.
 
I can't figure out how & where to add the .nomedia file. I am trying to separate voicemail audio files from my music files. I am sooo lost!
