Hierarchical Location Capability - locale? tasker?

urilabob

Lurker
Hi; I can't figure out from the documentation, please can anyone help me to
understand whether locale or tasker can do the following (and if so, how). I'd like to set up a hierarchy of defaults like this:

If I am in specific rooms (determined by MAC addresses), connect to their wifi
routers

Else if I am in range of a university router (determined by SSID, rather than
MAC address, because many routers have the same SSID) connect to it

Else if I am in range of my own wibro (mobile) router (determined by MAC
address) connect to it

Else if I am in range of my provider's 3G network, connect to it

Else if I am in my home country, connect to 2G

Else turn all networks off

Any chance of achieving this? I think the action part is straightforward, but can either locale or tasker handle a hierarchy of locations like this?

I don't have locale so I don't know about that one, but tasker will definitely do that for you. the wifi near context gives you the option to input either an ssid or mac address. you just need to create a profile for each location, and adjust the priority level of each profile in order of how you want to connect.

the 3g/2g thing I'm not sure about...

Just thought I'd report how this all worked out. I tried both locale and tasker. I was able to get tasker to do pretty much all I wanted, so that's what I am using now.
Cheers
Bob
