High quality calling

I live in the UK. I have a moto g 4 plus which has 4g. I did a small test the other day by putting another sim card in one of my old phones (moto g 2 (which is only 3g)), i then called that phone using my G4+ and noticed that the call quality was extremely high. I then put the same sim card in an older phone (Samsung galaxy s3 mini(which is also only 3g)) and noticed that the quality was just the standard quality again.

One thing to note is that when I make the phone call on my G4+ the signal bar goes from 4g to 3g, but once the call is finished it goes back up to 4g again.

I have heard of VOLTE and HD voice but i couldn't find enough information about them to clarify whether the phones were using one of these features.

I was just curious if anybody knows the tech behind this finding.
Thanks in advance
