High Speed MicroSDHC Card Question

I have a Dual Core 800Mhz smartphone with HD Video Record and Playback.

I download my videos to the External SD card, but have occasional issues with mp4 videos that sometimes lag, this can happen also with videos that are on the device memory, but as my majority of videos are on the External Card I thought to ask this question.

Will inserting a MicroSDHC Card Class 10 or higher make any difference to video playback no matter the processing power of the phone? in other words does the device system power influence the quality over the spec of the External Card?

It must make some difference - the longer it takes to read the less time it has to process - but unless your existing card is very slow indeed I doubt you'll see much difference.

That said class 10 cards are now cheap so it does no harm to just try one, perhaps a smaller size before buying a more expensive one. Buy a genuine big brand - many generic cards are very "optimistic" about their class ratings. And beware of fakes (avoid ebay).

The card I bought for my camera is MicroSDHC PNY brand class 10 - 8GB and its 20MB/s.

Was going to buy similar for phone but saw a Sandisk card which was 30 MB/s also class 10, and thought that this may help with playback issues for my phone.

If I do decide on a fast card for phone I will need to transfer all from old card to computer then over to new card, I find doing this via computer is much faster.

Do these cards need to be formatted first or are they preformatted?
