Update how? by rooting it or what? because isn't Kies just a backup tool.
If anything, if you are trying to root your phone, first off just use Clockwork Mod to make a backup of your entire system.
Next you can follow a root guide by looking for your phone on our devices list: Android Phones - Android Forums
Lastly, if i am wrong with the above and you are just trying to transfer your data from your S to the S3, you can try using DataSync a root is required though. Honestly you could just transfer files from one to another via a computer, and a lot of the things are backed up by the Google Cloud.
