hold button doesn't work anymore. any workaround?

I have a Samsung Galaxy S1 I896 captivate. My hold button doesn't work anymore. The button still clicks but nothing changes on my actual screen. This is extremely annoying because I have no way of accessing my phone whenever my phone is locked because the hold button would brings me back to the password screen.

Are there any apps that allow me to access my phone from locked mode using some sort of alternative method? e.g. pressing volume button, pressing the home button etc...

there is 'no lock screen' but that disables the lock screen entirely...some others may exist in the Play Store that change the pattern though
