Help Home email, VPN/SSH Tunnel - whatever

Hi Guys,

I run my own email from my house. This means email arrives directly to my computer which has a public facing IP address which is my domain mail server as the web sees it.

In the interim I am using GMail for mails to my mobile, but I hate using more than one email system as it gets messy.

Now, I can easily open port 143 and connect to my mail server with the HTC Mail app, however, my email server was never designed to be secure enough to allow public IMAP access. Passwords are weak, etc. etc.

What I normally do from a PC is use my own web mail or I create an SSH tunnel using pub/priv keys that auto connects on login and allows me to access port 143 over the tunnel.

I'm looking for an easy way to set up a secure tunnel or VPN to my home server.

When I say "easy", the current VPN opens seem to be anything but easy to set up. Notably the IPSec options require that my ADSL router has a VPN pass through to traverse the NAT for the IPSec protocol and so on.

I was wondering if anyone can suggest what is the easiest way to set up an automagic VPN or tunnel to my home server that comes up whenever I connect to a WiFi network or switch on the 3G data network on the phone.

Cheers,
Paul
