I am not sure if this is what your are looking for but I was able to disable and remove the stock Text messaging icon and replace it with the Handscent icon. I disabled the default Text message app and then removed the icon by dragging it to the trash bin. I then setup Handscent and was able to move the icon to the bottom of screen.
