Hi, Android user since 2008 or so, but not one that has ever rooted or modded or overclocked or any of that stuff. I'm a help desk tech with Windows but was never a programmer. I don't tinker with an expensive phone because I'm afraid to break it and my warranty.
That being said, I just got this Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G as a replacement for a defective TMobile MyTouch 4G Slide. I like the look of it and the Android 4.0 but there are some things that popped out quick as annoyances.
I got the phone yesterday and used MyBackup Pro to put my old data and apps back on the phone. I started customizing. And I downloaded a few more apps (trying to find a decent FM Radio app for one as I miss that from my myTouch 4G Slide). Every time I'd download an app, a shortcut would be placed on my home screen. Usually my main one. Whether there was space for it or not. Sometimes it would put a shortcut on top of another one. Other times it would simply replace what I had put there. And others just seemed to disappear for no reason. I grouped, for example, most of the stock folders together one on home screen in 2 rows (4 folders in each row). This morning, I rebooted my phone, as I do every morning, and only 1 of those 8 folders remained. My Phone, Contacts, and Messages buttons were gone from the bottom bar and my 2x4 weather widget disappeared to show me 5 or six shortcuts from apps I downloaded (even one I'd uninstalled) in its place.
Oh, and the stock browser wouldn't scroll at all. Impossible to use and type in. Installed Opera and that worked much better.
Other than that, I find the keyboard a bit difficult to slide out and I noticed, too, the lack of a 2nd Alt button. Otherwise, I like the buttons of both the onscreen and physical keyboards better than the ones on the myTouch 4G.
Any help without rooting it? I noticed some forums here for other phones running Froyo having the same icon disappearing issues. Some users used a different launcher to get around it. Can you recommend one?
I want to love this phone. It's my phone regardless. I can't go back to a myTouch 4G Slide that won't EVER connect to a wifi.
Thank you,
Gabinka
PS. I may have found a workaround, though I've only downloaded one app to test it. I moved to my blank screen and then opened Play Store from the app drawer. I found Netflix and downloaded it. The shortcut was placed on the blank screen with no others disappearing. I could then move it or delete it.
I also just got a software update from TMobile so that may have affected it as well.
