Help Home Screen Lag

Shocky

Android Expert
I can't help notice that the homescreen transistions are not very smooth compared to my Galaxy S3.

What happened to project butter? It's nice having the latest updates first but are Google failing to optimize updates for Nexus devices? Is this the trade off we get for having updates first?

With Quad Core processor at 1.3GHz is should be smoother than this.

To me it's as smooth as can be. The faster and larger your swipes, the faster the transition.
Maybe it's the contrast between your smaller screen and the N7,if you make the same motion.

Very smooth here too... couldn't ask for more butter :-)

I will say that the more widgets you have the more impact on hardware swiping has on the hardware though the specs and OS are more than capable of handling anything I was able to throw at it - I mention this in case you have a widget or something on your home screen from the marketplace that is poorly written that might affect your tablet. I have seen that before though not since the days of Honeycomb on my Xoom.

Yep. Are you rooted? Running a custom ROM and/or kernel? Undervolting? Overclocking? Something else I forgot people do with their tablets?

Nope, not rooted and on the latest firmware.

Already tried a factory reset, also the changeover to landscape has a horrible delay to it sometimes.

Don't get me wrong the lag isn't particularly bad, it's just the Galaxy S3 is so smooth and responsive it makes the Nexus 7 look bad.

Eww black text on black background... *swat*

Anyway...

Having played with both a Galaxy S3 and a Nexus 7, I will say I didn't see much interface lag difference between the two. There is a longer delay between switching from portrait to landscape (and vice versa) on tablets in general due largely to the fact that people tend to wiggle them more. They're bulkier than phones which are one-hand devices where as tablets are used more frequently with two hands. Google designed Android to take slightly longer to recognize the orientation change on tablets because they don't tend to change nearly as often as phones do, and so that extra delay helps keep the screen more steady and less jumpy. At least that's what I've heard. There is a setting in CyanogenMod to alter the delay I think but I'm not sure if it made it into CM 10 yet. Been a few releases since I've seen it (was originally for phones back in the CM 6 or 7 days).

Aside from that, I can't see much difference between a Galaxy S3 and a Nexus 7 from an interface lag point of view. I'd be curious to see a video of how bad your Nexus is compared to mine. I will say I accidentally messed up some settings in my kernel and had a 2+ second interface lag for a few minutes last night but that was me screwing around with settings I shouldn't have been screwing with, hehe. Doubt that's your issue...

Also tried my brothers Nexus 7 and feels the same as mine, it's just not as smooth and transistions to landscape are slow.

Think I'll try some different launchers.

I noticed (for me) that having the bookmarks widget has a chronic negative impact on smoothness.
Certain other widgets do also, such as many weather widgets.

Yep, just installed Nova launcher.

It's so much smoother than the stock launcher and transistions to landscape are instant.

Why isnt the stock launcher like this? I thought Nova launcher was about replicating the stock experience on other devices yet it's actually allot better. .... Go figure. :D
