Help home selector, what is it's function?

I am trying to find out what the home selector does, what it's for?

If you have other launchers installed you can switch between them easily. I use Nova so it's an option for me in 'Home'.

Correct. If you have never considered a different launcher, you might want to look at Nova. You can customize your home screens any way you want, instead of trying to fit everything into what the phone came with. You can also back up and restore your layout. Super easy and worth it, I assure you!
