"Home" Setting

Thanks for responding. It's a new setting, in between "Language & Input" and "storage" It says "Home" and has red, yellow, blue, green colors. Since I started seeing it, after a call or a search, it takes me to a 5th, blank screen.

That sounds quite suspicious to me. Can you please post a screenshot of it? (Just as it appears in your settings, not after pressing it.) That may give us some clue.
 
Here again is a screenshot of most of my settings. The new app that I've never seen before says "Home" and is four-colored. Ever since it showed up, I have not been able to set my home screen to the middle pane. After I call or use an app, I'm returned to screen #1 of 5. #3 is my home screen (I'd like it to be). I'll upload this screenshot again, and thanks for your help.

Not sure what that 'Home' references to but it's not necessarily an app. An installed app typically get its icon added to the app menu, but items incorporated into the Settings menu get put there by the manufacturer or the carrier, changes to the Settings menu are done at the system-level. You can change options in the Settings menu but don't have that kind of ability to actually change the Settings menu. And the Settings menu is a direct reflection to your specific phone model. Every phone model has its own unique hardware configuration so the Settings menu in one phone won't be the same as in another phone because not every phone has the exact same capabilities or functionality -- i.e. if you phone doesn't support NFC, there isn't going to be NFC options in the Settings menu, or if ZTE includes some kind of feature in its phones there's a difference between ZTE specific features (just in ZTE Settings) and common default Android features (in all Settings menus).

Are you sure that Home was just recently added to your Settings menu and it hasn't been there already?
What happens when you tap on it?

Thank you for trying to help. When I select this setting, it shows a small thumbnail picture of what looks like a weather app....a time and a small sun. Left of it is a button, blue, and if I push it, it turns white but only until I release it. To the right is a trash can but nothing happens when I push it.
 
That is somewhat puzzling. Perhaps you might find an answer by going to ZTE's site, as that option could be just a ZTE-specific one.
Their site has its own help forum and there's info on contacting ZTE tech support there too.

Thanks, svim. I called ZTE a few days ago and, as usual, the Technical Support guy was stumped but suggested a complete factory data reset! I said thanks anyway. If my money is right, I'll be buying a new android phone from Ebay, etc., so will leave this phone alone until I get it's data put on a new phone. I will try their support page, though. Thank you very much! Jeffrey Walker (PS: am I supposed to create a cool screen name? If so, how do I do that?
