Help Hotspot tethering issues

WFHarris

Newbie
Does anyone else on here use the legitimate verizon hotspot? I have been lurking here for a while before i bought my Bionic. I returned it as soon as V announced the Razr. I have unlimited data (both phone and hotspot) and use the hotspot for my home internet.

My bionic tethered with no problems. The razr will tether but the performance on certain websites is terrible. (Yahoo being one of the worst). I went back to V (corporate store) with the issue. I brought my ipad along to show them the issue. They verified it with both my ipad and with one of their own tablets. Long story short they replaced the phone after talking with the techline level 2, and the issue still remains. Is this a known issue with all Razrs?

On a side note the phone hard tethers fine with no issues using a usb cord.

Well went to another V store last night to check on the trouble ticket since 14 days is tomorrow. Reproduced the problem and then the rep tryed his razr and his had the same issue. At first he blamed it on the website (yahoo) but when i tryed to pull up verizonwireless.com and go to accessories the connection timed out before the page would load.

He called the techline and they could not find my case logged but did see the actvity in my account from Mon. Techline found known issues of the hotspot in the system and motorola has been notified.

I did get a case number this time and my 14 day deadline has been extended until this has been closed. A V tech called this morning to get more info on the issue.

Since i have seen this on 3 phones (2 of mine and the V reps) I assume this is an issue with alot more than just mine.

do keep us posted as this could be a recurring issue, and glad to see your tethering legally :) hopefully the razr's tethering capabilities will be addressed asap possibly with an update

:) i'm not going to root the phone to fix this. The big red V is going to have to get this one done .

I did get a sim card error today aslo ???

Verizon tech: "Just pull the battery" me: Um... this is a Razr...
VT: "Just cycle the power then." Me: "Please document this on my account." Also please confirm that there is a return extensiton noted in my account??? he did verify that there was.

The saga continues. still poor perfromance on certain websites.

yeah I get that too. Yahoo is terrible. sometimes it loads, other times it loads for a long time and then just stops- dont even get an error.

works perfectly while tethered, but not while using hotspot.

UPDATE.

So i have had the phone since 11/11. Verizon has know I have this issue since I told them on 11/20. They fianly issued a Trouble Ticket on 11/23.

Since then I have been in contact with them no less than 5 times without any indication of when this will be fixed. Last week when I called them about the sim card issues, I had them check on the trouble ticket and they told me not to contact them again about it, they would call me on 12/12 (today).

We will see.

im sorry if im paying for a service that i would want to use daily, and having issues with the tethering, i would call them everyday regardless of what they said, otherwise i would tell them to refund me some money.

Well Verizon did call back today like they said they would. I give them credit for that. But that is as far as it goes.

I was told that they had no more information about the fix and he would be glad to remove the feature I was paying for that was not working (hotspot). When i asked if i would be able to get unlimited usage back when and if the feature ever worked on the razr he told me NO but i probably didn't need it anyway. YEah right I used about 12 GB last month of data and the hotspot wasn't even fully functional.

Hopefully Motorola figures this out sometime soon.

If you have unlimited data don't you get unlimited hotspot if you call to activate it? I didn't have hotspot on my account initially however over Thanksgiving I called and had them add it to my plan and it is unlimited 4G hotspot.

i've heard you have to sign up for a plan for hotspot tethering, not 100% sure

and if the guy says he can disable it for you, tell him that you would rather keep your service, and they credit you the times that its not working, if they dont agree to that, escalate the call to a manager and ask for the features there, because you are going to be keeping the tethering plan, and you shouldnt be charged for something that isnt working because the device isnt fully functional.

your choice though. i wouldnt stop til they made the right decision

Why don't you try to use an alternative hotspot app instead of waiting for a fix?

I am NOT rooting this phone. My rooting days are over. I am happy about everything else on this phone but this sucks. I heard they have a (rumored) update set for mid febuary. WTF? I told them about this issue when I purchased it and they said there was an update coming in a couple of weeks. They wouldn't extend my return policy either.

Just use USB tethering.

Anyone know how to usb tether an Ipad?

Verizon offered again today to take the hotspot feature off my account. Said a "tentative" date for a fix is mid February.

In a word.... NO.

If you turn on your verizon hotspot, I believe you are permitted just 2 GB per month. I learned this from Verizon when I mentioned that to them and they corrected me. As far as I know the only unlimited hotspot plan came with the Palm Pre (3G) at no extra charge., not even the 20 per month, just the 29.99 unlimited data charge. My wife is keeping her Palm Pre just for that.

^ wrong.

if you have the unlimited data plan with a 4G device, you get unlimited hotspot as well. you pay $30 for it.

from vzw.com under the "tell me more" link for the 4G mobile hotspot feature I have active::

"4G Mobile Hotspot
Mobile Broadband Connect

Use your Verizon Wireless 4G LTE Smartphone as a modem to get instant online access on your computer.

Mobile Hotspot

Using your 4G LTE Smartphone, share your data allowance with multiple Wi-Fi-enable devices. No additional drivers or software necessary.

Requires an unlimited data package / plan subscription of $29.99 or higher."

You pay an EXTRA $30/mth on top of what your data plan costs.

Aparently this is not a big issue for enough people.

Either Verizon does not sell very many hotspots or users just figure that paying for something that only is only partially functional is not a big deal.

Verizon continues to downplay the issue and Motorola has not come up with a fix yet.

What am i missing?

Well Merry Christmas y'all. I'm pretty new to this android business, having just upgraded from a flip phone. We had two flip phones and a mobile hotspot before, but I wanted a smart phone so got the Razr. Now when we try to use hotspot, we're having the same issues as described here.

Now.... I don't have a clue as to what rooting is, I think I understand tethering. I tried the 1428 mtu fix but that didn't seem to help. I guess that rooting is the same as tethering, or plugging the phone into the computer using the usb wire. If I do that, can another computer successfully connect using wireless, or is it still a wireless hotspot? Sorry I'm not entirely familiar with the terminology. Any help is appreciated. Also is there another droid that I might like to try to talk VZ into giving me that will be a decent droid and mobile hotspot as well?

Also, I was told that i could use the phone and hotspot at the same time but that doesn't seem to be the case here in west Fort Worth. Thanks.....

I'm interested in the hotspot issue too. I can afford to wait on the wireless feature. If I'm connected using a USB to my laptop, can I talk and use my computer at the same time?

Thanks! I'm liking the RAZR and will probably get one next week.
