Hotspot Throughput Comparisons?

Hi. I just joined this bulletin board, so please forgive me if I commit any faux pas.

I am a contractor, so I have to live in a hotel while I am working. I stay in Motel 6 to save money. For Internet access, I could pay $3.44 + about 7% tax each day.

However, my wife and I moved to rural Missouri several months ago and, for "high speed" Internet access (since we no longer could get cable), we bought a Verizon Samsung Galaxy 10.1 tab. Even though I knew that, in Missouri, we were not going to be 4G, we got the 4G Galaxy anyway because we knew we might use it in 4G-covered areas....

It's very nice, but was difficult at home because it'd drop us alot. We were able to find another way to get high speed internet access. So, I took the tablet with me on the road so I no longer have to pay Motel 6 for web access.

We what does suck about the tab is that I have a data limit. Right now I'm paying for the 5GB limit, but I know I'll go over it and have to pay an extra $10 per GB.

Well, two weeks ago, I got a Motorola Droid 4 4G smartphone also from Verizon. While at Werizon, I told the guy that I wanted to up my tablet data limit to 10 GB for an extra $30. He mentioned that, instead, since I had no data limit grandfathered into my phone, I should instead pay the $30 and use the phone as the hotspot and there'll be no data limit! I jumped on that.

Sadly, I'm finding that the access is less than ideal.
First-off, it was taking forever and a day to get my Toshiba laptop (Windows 7) to link to the Droid 4 network even though it could see it. At least it's functional now and I am using it.

Here's the real issue, though, I'm noticing that my throughput is maxing out at 36 Mbps. I was trying to watch a stream last night and it was atrocious - about 12 MBps. I turned off the Droid 4 hotspot and switched over to the tablet. It was great at 65 MBps with continuous streaming. Of course, I'm getting killed with data.... *sigh*

To make matters worse, even without the hotspot, the phone is not connected to the web as web as my old Blackberry was.

I love my Droid 4 smartphone and the fact that it has unlimited data.

Is there something that I can do to imporve its capability as a hotspot and to access the web more effectively? I'm wonding if the wrap-around silicone casing that I got for the phone is significantly adversely impacting the throughput...

Any advice?

Thanks!
Vin :)
