Root How and Why to root for newbies

Tried every combination and still no success. I can mount my SD card so drivers are working but SWupdater still will not connect my phone. Uninstalled and installed both programs, used different usb cords, and still nothing. Running out of ideas. Also started to look at manual root but links at sdxdev site are broken. Waiting for reply. Sheesh.

You've got to be doing something simple wrong. Unplug your phone. Check "USB Debugging" under Settings/Applications. Take the battery out. Hold down Volume Down, etc, and try following the steps then.

Tried that Coop. Maybe U guys here can draw something from my convo with guys over here.
I'm Paradroid.

Did you try this?
"I wouldn't recommend going too far w/o Swupdater working. Once it works, its the best way back to square one you can get.

Wildshot: uninstall all the drivers/programs again. Re-download sw updater again. There's 2 places: solusts guide has a temporary repost and there is one in the backup files at the bottom of the EB28 Common Files thread. Try both w/o anything else installed & see where ur at then.
You may also need to try this w/usb driver from samsung's support page (see xp_ _ froyo thread below for link).

Here's a similar thread that may help:

Mounting SD Card in Windows XP with Froyo Builds

Also, don't know if you've tried out this thread. I know it works with XP.

OK, this is going to sound silly, but try a different USB port on your computer or try a different cable.

I believe he's tried different cables. But different ports works for me sometimes, can't believe I forgot about that!

Sometimes it's hard to see the forest through the trees. :D

BTW Coop, I'm surprised you didn't sign up on my thread for local help. If one of us was right down the street from Droidnoob this would be a done deal.

Haha yeah. If it was up to me I would, but you see, I'm only 15. Plus my dad's a police officer and he wouldn't be too happy about our location on the internet..... That'd be real dangerous for our family

Thanks guys for the support. Will try tonight. Can't believe this bastard giving me so much trouble. I have hacked and modded xbox 1, wii, DSs, iphones, psp and working on doing PS3 sometime soon. I can follow a tutorial well. Just this prick. If my transform had nuts i wouldve kicked him in them by now.

Guys, thanks very much for this and the other thread. I had many of the same questions, so I'm glad someone had the time to ask them, and you guys had the time to answer in great detail. One last confirmation on rooting:

No wiping your phone by rooting.
This will install custom recovery. You must apply a kernel IN custom recovery.
The ROM isn't changed.
I still have NO idea what "custom recovery" means, but I suppose that doesn't matter. What I do want to do, though, is confirm for sure that rooting will not require me to reinstall my apps, both in the phone and on the SD card. I was very curious what would happen to paid apps once one roots. Sounds like they'll all still be there? Thanks again!

Nothing is wiped when you root, trust me haha. Now if you want to know custom recovery, try this. Turn off your phone. Now hold volume down, the voice button, and the power button. Now you'll see very few options. Go back to system and use the root guide to get custom recovery (and of course root once again) and then try the same thing, volume down, voice button, power button. Does it look different at all?

GREAT MONKEY TURDS! IT FINALLY WORKED! Thanks to all you guys for your assistance. Now new questions: what's rfs and EXT4 and is there a benefit to having one over the other? And where can we find root only apps(wifi tether). Thanks again to all:)

Help... I followed all the steps in the guide and I believe I'm rooted but when I go to the app market and try to download Titanum Back up it says not space... I checked my phone and it has zero internal space... why????

Rfs, ext4 and ext2 are file systems. Rfs is the slowest but most stable. Ext4 is faster and I feel acceptably stable. Ext2 is really fast but not so stable. With Ext2 you run the risk of corrupted data and the hours of troubleshooting that goes along with it.

Whoo Hooooooo!!! I'm finally rooted!!! Thanks for the easy guide for us noobs! I am so glad it was in terms for me to understand and follow!! Now I need to see what all I can do! Like remove sprint id?? anyone know how???

Download Titanium backup. Open it. Hit menu, then batch, then remove all user and system apps. Hit uncheck all. Now go through and check the things like the tutorial widgets and sprint id. hit uninstall.

So I want to install a Rom and I know i have to backup. Do i do the backup from the recovery menu or do it from Titanium Backup and how plz?

And on top of that, if you don't know what an app does, don't uninstall it =.= I make sure I know all these programs before I tamper with them.

I'll fix these steps to avoid further confusion. Thanks for the feedback.

As for SWUpdater, it tells you exactly what to do. Accept the warning or whatever. Start with your phone unplugged. Take the battery out, then put it back in. Hit next. Hold down Volume Down, Camera, and Power. You'll get the screen SWUpdater shows. Plug it in, it will install drivers. Hit next, unplug your phone, take battery out, hit next, hold down Volume Down, Camera, and Power. Press the Start button and it will start. When it hits 100%, unplug your phone and take the battery out. Continue step 6.5

Thank you for these detailed instructions. It might be obvious if I was actually going through this process but there seems to be something missing here.

1) For complete clarity, am I correct that the statements about plugging and unplugging refer to the usb connection to the computer rather than the power connection?

2) The instructions say to start with the phone unplugged, then half way through they say to "Plug it in...." then "Hit next, unplug your phone....", then "When it hits 100%, unplug your phone....". There is no indication that the phone should be plugged in between the two unplug instructions.

1. Yes.

2. The onscreen directions on SW Updater are very clear. After you check for drivers you unplug your phone and pull the battery. You then reinstall the battery and hit volume down, camera, and power and your phone will turn on to the screen that says to not turn your phone off. You then hit next on your computer and it will tell you to plug your phone in again and check for drivers. Once it detects the drivers are still there, it will begin the download. After the download is 100% complete, unplug your phone.
