How can I delete duplicated song titles?

Djard

Newbie
On my "Trio Stealth 4.3" tablet, running Android v4, there is a "Play All" pre-installed app that lists every song I have loaded 10 times. I have about 1,000 songs loaded on the external microSD card, so deleting 10,000 titles one at a time is not practical.

I accessed the tablet directory with the songs from my PC and deleted them all, rebooted the tablet and discovered that I now have each song title listed 11 times. So the Android app clearly does not like being accessed from Win 7.

Another thing I tried is deleting all the folders containing the songs (after copying them to my PC), using the resident file manager. But the song list in the app still contains the duplicates. Clean Master is no help either. The only way I am able to clear out duplicate titles is to delete them individually in the "Play All" app itself (groan!).

After deleting the first 100 song titles (10 songs) and then rebooting the device, the app scanned for new songs and correctly listed the 10 songs without duplicating the titles. So loading songs onto the tablet from my PC is how the problem originates.

Is there a utility to manage the problem or a more efficient way to remove the duplicate song titles?

SD Maid with the Pro key will do what you want. Despite its name, it does more than tidy the sd card. Most of its advanced functions are for rooted devices, but the "Duplicates" functionality does not require root (as long as your duplicated files are not in a /system folder). You can even use the built-in scheduler to do it for you automatically, retaining only the newest or oldest.

Sorry, but I'll have to take back two of the three thanks. SD Maid does not have the capability to remove duplicated song titles...nothing in the root directory of the app or subfolders either. Moreover, as a file manager, in my 'pinion, SD Maid also come up short.

If I have overlooked any feature SD Maid has that is capable of removing or correcting lame Android's proclivity to duplicate multiple times audio and video titles (but not the actual files) then it is so well hidden that the developers of the GUI ought to take a lesson in logical thinking.

I don't expect Android and apps written for the OS to emulate Microsoft's standards (LOL!), but never have I seen such flaky "technology." No wonder Apple products are increasingly gaining popularity.

I may have misunderstood your earlier post. It definitely works to remove duplicate song files. I know, because I just did it. I've been using Android a long time, and I've never experienced or even heard of issues as you describe with duplicating titles but not files. How is that even possible? The title is just a user-friendly name for accessing the file. What happens when you select one of the duplicates?

I do agree that its file management capabilities fall short. I use X-plore for that function.

Does your Trio have a desktop manager for your PC that you can download? simular to samsung Kies or blackberry desktop manager?

That would be the simplest thing to get.

If not, then use the PC to create an organized folder of all the music. Then remove all music from the Trio.

Copy and paste the folder from the PC onto the SD card in the Trio. But when doing so the SD card should be treated as a mass storage device.

As you continue to add new music in the future always place it in the same folder on the SD card. Keep in mind the SD card when adding music should be treated as mass storage device.

That way if you are placing a duplicate track into the folder your computer will recognize and pop up a box asking you how you want to handle the duplicate song name or track.

The problem is actually created by loading music from my PC, using Windows Explorer. But it's not the fault of Windows' file manager.

Copying files to the SD card, especially overwriting music files already loaded, confuses the Android app, which I uninstalled and replaced it with the excellent Rocket Player that is free of the problem. Now I can load media to the tablet from my PC without duplicating the song titles.

If I add album art to an MP3 file and overwrite the one on my tablet, the player duplicates the title. So it's a bug in the Android app. I see a lot of folks on the Internet seeking help with this problem, thinking duplicated titles equates with actual file duplication. Not so according to my file manager.

"Super-HD Play," an otherwise nice app, has the same bug when loading video and photos. I have to delete false entries, after which the menu is stable.

Like I commented earlier, rarely is there a bug-free app for Android, even non-freeware.

Oh. ..... For me I never had that problem, unless I was trying to use Kies and drag drop on the same unit.

MediaMonkey for Windows (MMW)-- which syncs beautifully with MediaMonkey for Android- has 2 different free, add-ons that can automatically remove duplicates in playlists-- one of which provides lots of options for handling the duplicates. (Or you can remove duplicates very easily by sorting your playlists by song title on MMW and deleting the duplicates either from the playlist or from the drive.)

After years of struggling to manage, tag, and sync my media collection & playlists between my PC and my phone, I recently solved all of my problems by using (free) MediaMonkey for Windows on my PC and the newly released (free) MediaMonkey for Android. It's awesome. I was so thrilled about finally having a TOTAL solution that I wrote a long-winded post about it. (Probably too long--sorry-- but the solution is so comprehensive that it's hard to summarize quickly.) Here's my post...

Firstly, has the android app that's getting "confused" got a 'rescan' option? If so, have you tried it?

Secondly, have you tried clearing out the apps data cache? Settings > Apps > [name of app] > [clear cache] & [clear data].

When I firstly searched for a solution to song titles getting duplicated, I saw a myriad of complaints identical to mine on the Internet. I think many folks assume a duplicated title means a duplicated file. Not so. The problem I described is app specific as Rocket Player does not get confused when I overwrite a song on the external SD card that I use solely for storage of media files.

The rescan option failed (I think it just added another title). And yes, I did clean out the cache in the root directory, both with a system utility and manually.

I'll try MediaMonkey for Android. Hope it doesn't make a monkey out of me.

Thanks, but as I mentioned, the problem is in song title duplication and not in song file duplication. I resolved the problem by removing the resident app and used Rocket Player, which is not only stable but offers a larger song album image as well as better control panel. Best of all, it does not duplicates song titles when you upload or edit files in Windows Explorer.
