How can I flash a JPAY J5 prison tablet?

Hello,

I picked up a jpay jp5 tablet from ebay. It is password locked and I would like to factory reset it, or if not, I'd like to flash another android to it.

I hqve tried the recovery options, but the only thing there is reboot tablet.

What can I do? Please don't reply with phone numbers or emails trying to charge for "software"

JPay JP5 tablets are a specialized product targeting a very controlled market segment, prison inmates. They're tablets that don't integrate well in the general consumer market as they are, by design, very curated and limited in functionality. Basically using one as a home usage device is going to have a lot of limitations and restrictions interacting with typical online services. Flashing the ROM isn't a practical solution as the only stock ROMs available will just involve the same usage-monitored Android OS.
If possible, return this back to the ebay seller, and buy a tablet that's not intentionally purposed to be used in a closed environment.

I do remember on the back of the JP6 there i drilled two pinholes that you can use a paperclip to bridge a circuit while booting up that puts it into fastboot mode. Just before the boot logo comes up bridge that circuit and hold. The fastboot shows up in a very tiny font in the corner of the screen. You can then use adb commands to sideload a ROM if you can find one that works. I'm not sure about the JP5's. This method may also put the tablet to sleep in which you'll need to hit the reset button by the LED power lights. The jump circuit is really obvious. It's two small round bare copper circles at the middle of the board.

One other thing that may happen, and this is because I believe the circuit has something to do with the settings, is that you may end up bypassing the login screen and go into read only mode. I did that a couple times by a fluke. The big problem is that JPAY has set it up with very few utility apps and a watered down settings app. None of the apps are installed via APK. I was able to hack the kiosks and get app files that were in zip format. Those files were copied into an update folder on the tablet then they would auto install on reboot. I searched a good portion of their network with an IP scanner that I wrote in JavaScript to find anything that was running a web server. I couldn't find any app files that would update it to a full working tablet.

Another thing about these tablets, is that if you do factory reset them, they do not come up with the same routine to log into a google account. They give you a blank launcher with nothing else. If you do by chance bypass the login screen by jumping that circuit, you can turn down the volume all the way and get prompted to set up "do not disturb". In the name of the scheduled item, I typed in a few special (non-alphanumeric, so the spell checker won't run on it) Then I did a select all, copy and then paste to the end of the string repeatedly to double the string each time. Eventually, the UI will get overloaded and keep restarting. At that point, do a hard reboot and the full recovery menu will come up where you can do a factory reset. But, then again, you'll have a useless tablet. However, if you can sideload apps through the fastboot mode, maybe you can actually load a full set of working apps that you can use.
