Hi there. My Prime 6 smartphone has been acting up for a while now and I was going to try a reset, but I really don't want to lose all my stuff. I can save all my photos, music etc. on my pc, but would really like to save my text messages if I could as they contain lots of info, addresses and such. I installed an app called SMS Back up and Restore and this saved all my text messages. This was great, but if I reset my phone the app will be gone and I cant see how I can get my text messages back even if I re-install it.

If anyone can help or has any suggestions I would be really grateful as I am sure a reset would fix my problem, but I really don't want to lose my text content.

Thank you
Frankiesgirl
PS Sorry if I have not done this quite right, but its my first time here.

The folder the application saved it to should have the files to copy off.

I would suggest Helium too though. It doesn't need a root, but it does require connecting the device to a computer. It can back-up a lot of application data too, as well as SMS and such.

Super BackUp { https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.idea.backup.smscontacts } also backs SMS/MMS to readable files. Like that contain the number, message, and the contact name if you have added one. It gives an option to e-mail the back-ups to yourself too.

SMS Backup and Restore can save your backup to Dropbox or other cloud storage, or you can copy the backup file to a PC (look in Storage/Emulated/0/SMSBackupRestore) and then copy it back to the phone after you reset.

I use SMS Backup and Restore as well and it works as advertised. I save the files to my SD card and then copy them to my NAS. AsTelyx mentioned you can use a cloud service as well. I've backed up and restored using it.

Hello
Thanks for the help. I have got my messages onto my pc with Super Back Up, but they are a bit jumbled up, but readable. Can you help me with how I get them back after my reset please. Would it just be a case of copying them back on through my pc?

Thank you for your help with getting my messages onto my pc, but I cant find the folder to put them back in when my phone is connected to my pc. Any ideas anyone please?

Just copy it back exactly where you copied it from. You might need to reinstall the back-up application forst if you can't remember the name of the folder.

Hello

Try as I will I cant seem to get my SD card to come up on my PC. It used to come up before I started the back up with SMS Back up and Restore. Neither is any other folders on my phone showing up on my PC other than DMC and Pictures. I am trying to back up all my music files to PC before I do a reset. I am in a total muddle now and would really appreciate any help that anyone can give me to help me through this reset.

Thank you in anticipation.

Have you tried just restarting your phone? Also you could save your SMS backup to Google Drive. Is your phone set to file transfer mode when you connect it to your PC?

Hello
I really don't know what is happening now as the phone is not working as it was before I started trying to back up my files. When I connect the phone to my pc all I get is the window in file explorer showing me the internal storage and no SD card. The card is still in there as I can view it on my phone with music and such in it. When I click on the internal storage in file explorer window it only comes up with DCIM and pictures. Even the icon for the phone has changed and now looks just like a camera which is all that I am getting to show up on my pc. I don't even get the box up that asks me what I want to do with the phone eg view files, sync ect. If and when I reset my phone hopefully that may rectify, but I was hoping to transfer all my music and other files to my pc, but cant get into them to transfer them.

I have restarted my phone a few times (even shut it down), but it still is the same.

Thank you

I'm sorry but I don't know what else to try. You could try backing everything up Google drive (or another cloud based service) but I don't know how much stuff you're trying to backup.

It sounds like it's in some sort of transfer mode. Like it's defaulting to just copying pictures. Is your phone set to MTP mode? Take a look at this link and see if anything there might help.

Hello. I have finally got to the stage where it is unavoidable to reset my phone. I have used the "Backup Restore" and I saved it to SD card, but now I cant find the files anywhere on my SD card. There is a folder that says "Backup Restore" but there is nothing in it. I have managed to get my text messages to my email, but have no idea of how to get them from my PC back to my phone. I am sorry if I am being dense, but I have never done anything like this before and am not very good when it comes to my phone. Please if anyone can help me I would be so very grateful. A step by step explanation would be so very good if anyone can help.

Thank you

Hi thanks for the advice. I managed to back everything up, but can't find the back up files on my phone. I did email the files to myself, but don't know how or where to copy them back to. It says that if I want to use the app to restore them I will need to use the premium version which I am presuming will not be free. Any help would be grately appreciated.

Thank you

Hi, I have done it!!! I used the SMS Back Up and Restore and it worked for me. I do seem to have lost some items that were on my SD card (I did unmount it and remove it before I did my reset), but its not too bad as I backed up most of my files, photos, music etc to my pc first so I can get the important things back.

Thank you to everyone who helped and gave me advice with this problem.
