If you copy them back to your SD Card, the SMS app will be able to restore them.
I'm not sure what directory it reads from, but if you create another backup, store it to SD, see where the SMS app puts the new hbk file, just copy the old one over and restore from there.
There are hbk file readers on the web, but the hbk extension isn't exclusive to htc sms ackups by the looks of things so I'm not sure if they would work.

Have you tried opening with HTC Sync?
Ok so I made this account just to answer this question so
This is assuming that you emailed the backup to yourself
1) Download the file onto the computer
2) Plug your phone into your computer
3) Launch HTC sync manager
4) Let the computer recognize the phone
5) In the manager click on files
6) After clicking on files scroll down to the bottom there is a folder that
says sms_backup
7) click on the arrow on the left of that folder
8) go to the place that you downloaded the backup onto the computer
9) click and drag it into the folder
10) click on messages on your phone so it shows all your text from
everyone.
11) click on menu on the top right corner of the phone then click on back
up and restore
12) choose restore then pc the backup you just dragged into the phone on
the phone
13) then choose if you want to erase the text you have on your phone
already or keep them and then it will start restoring.
Its not hard i just typed it exactly how to do it with out skipping steps.
