how do I add things to the desktop?

My mum recently got a Wildfire S and it has a bar across the desktop with buttons to switch things like wifi and bluetooth on and off. It looks quite useful, how can I get this on my desire?

just long press anywhere on the screen,select widgets and then select the power control widget.

Thanks. How do i remove something from the desktop? I added something there that I dont want and cannot work out how to remove it.

Worked it out. Long press the app link and drag it down to "remove"
