How do I backup my info? and is there any desktop software?

normandg

Newbie
Do I still need to use the HTC Sync software with my new EVO 3D (for use with Outlook)? I used it with my Hero. I looked at HTC's web site and they only talk about the EVO 4G. So, I thought I would post the question here before I download the software.

Thanks
Norman

there is an update to htc sync. its still the same as the old htc sync you are using on the hero.

installing htc sync is totally optional. not needed to operate the phone or connect it to the computer to use as a disk. if you want to interface with outlook, then yes install.

I would like to know if there is any desktop software i can download to back up my stuff like contacts, images etc.... The tiny manual it came with say go to www.htc.com/support and there is no software i see for the 3D? Does anyone know? (sorry if i am a n00b, i have had blackberrys forever)

Thanks!

I use Google to back up all of my stuff, contacts, docs, etc., and copy over music and pictures to my laptop for storage or when I upgrade, and I downloaded and sync with appbrain for my apps (you can download it from the market).

Also, if you log into your Google account and go to Gmail, you can manage your contacts so much easier and add pictures, update numbers and addresses, etc. and they over the air sync is so fast, you can watch it happen.

As far as the manual, I believe what it's talking about is HTC Sync which can be downloaded here Application - HTC Sync for all HTC Android Phones & HTC Smart and it's more along the lines of what you're used to with BB Desktop Manager.

So, basically what Complex757 and EarlyMon said.

Application - HTC Sync for all HTC Android Phones & HTC Smart

You can use HTC Sync™ to synchronize Outlook contacts and calendar or Outlook Express contacts (Android & HTC Smart)and the bookmarks of web browser between your computer and your phone(Android). It also lets you install third-party Android applications on the phone, and bring your photos, videos, documents, songs, and playlists to your phone(Android).

In less than a week I've already had my box and original charger stolen, gotten my 3VO wet, have had blackout and fadeaway issues, and the dedicated camera button stopped working.... Um, yeah. The good news is that I'm probably the first person on the planet to have my 3VO replaced by Sprint. A badge that I guess I should wear proudly.

Nonetheless, after receiving my new replacement yesterday afternoon, I decided to use the USB cable and synch it up to my PC. Well, after identifying that there's a new device, it proceeded to search for any active software, to which it did not. Now I understand that contact information can be synched up through your Google account, but what if I want to upload digital movies, or backup my 3D pictures and video?

My apologies if this has been asked in a similar thread, but I didn't see any relating to PC synching.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Moved your post here - please review this thread.

By the way - you didn't use this method with your Evo 4G?

This is my very first Android phone, so I'm not familiar with all the ins and outs of a smartphone... Before that I had the Touch Pro 2. It's all a learning process for me, but I'm glad I have the support I need from people like you and the other helpful users on this board... Much appreciated.

To the mod who merged someones elses thread here with mine and still used my title? WHY????????? he is not even asking what I asked! I do not even understand his question? why would you totally just put someome elses question here that is different with mine??????????????

You may not have realized it, but the software HTC intended you to find on that link in your post (your OP) was HTC Sync.

You were both asking the same question in different ways - and you both were in need of the same answers - 1) where to get HTC Sync, 2) what can it do, 3) how to use it.

So, honestly, as you are new to Sync (and maybe Android, as you've said you were a BB user), and normandg is familiar with Sync and Android - it sure seemed kinda logical to get you hooked up with the HTC Sync answers and the crowd with the experience to help.

And between you being newer and plus I just liked your title, I went with that. :)

We square? :)

PS - This isn't like some forums - our house rolls like this: the OP may begin a thread, but the community owns the thread, not the OP. ;)

So i downloaded the HTC sync, connected the phone. I see the program. But I do not see how I can backup my contacts from my phone to the PC. It seemed it only wanted to do it the other way around, from windows contact to PC? At this point I only want to back up my contacts just incase something happens to the phone.... I do not see how to do this on the snyc program. Someone mentioned google does this automatically? but where do i find them then?

Thanks

homescreen -> People -> Menu -> View

If your contacts show they are all in Google, then they're automagically backed up to the cloud.

If they're all on Phone, or some are - transfer them like this: http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-3d/365797-moving-contacts-phone-google.html

Note you can also create an export vCard from Google contacts on the web in order to keep an offline backup if you prefer.

My contacts did not show. So I did what you said in the other thread, saved it on the SD card, then I uploaded that Vcard to google and made a new group called "phone contacts". I did not sync anything to my phone though. Becuase last time i did that, i got like 5,000 emails address's under my people button on my phone! which made it crazy when i wanted to try to find contacts to call. Is that normal for all email address's to have wanted to show up under the people button?
