My launcher has disapeared all of a sudden. I think it is called the launcher. I am refering to the icon in the middle of the bottom row of the screen

Your launcher is home screen and its methods to access and launch apps. The part you're pointing to is the icon for the app drawer.
First, make sure it's not just a memory glitch. If you have a phone with a user replaceable battery, pull it out for 60 seconds. If it's a sealed battery you'll want to do a power reset, the button sequence varies by phone model.
If that doesn't work, press and hold the blank space until a menu appears. Snoop around from there until you find the app drawer action (the precise steps will depend on what launcher you have).
