Root How do I get from here, to there?

Its has been about two years since I've done anything like this to my phone. I'd like to install the hellybean, or whatever is up an running the best for JB

My phone:
Firmware: 2.1
Rooted with unleash the beast:
Kernel :2.6.29 jetaek.lee@sep-11#2

Apps:
Superuser Permission
Titanium backup
Rom Manager

On my PC:
Odin3_v1.7 (have not used yet)
An older version of Odin (Odin3 one-click)
Cappy Drivers, Kies.....

I ran titanium backup, copied the folder "titaniumbackup" from my sd card to my pc.

I'm not really sure what I need to do to get to helly bean. In terms of flashing back to stock, or kernels.....using different backup prgrams, or ClockworkRecovery Mod....
I mostly understand the steps but I'm not sure if I'm at the point where its ok to proceed. It seems a lot has evolved in the years. I used to flash my LG VU back in the day and had lots of fun with it.....But now with android, I'm not sure what methods have been replaced.
 
Every time i try to get started, I end up with a Folder full of downloads, and a dozen open tabs on my browser, and a few extra apps that don't work. (onandroid)

Kies will not upgrade me to Froyo, it get my phone to download mode, then kies aborts and tells me to go to recovery mode...
This is extremely frustrating. Because most help threads seem to start in the middle lets flash a ROM,....go backup first<link>!....to back up you need to root <link>.....now that you are rooted flash back to stock <link>, wipe data <link>.....
Man I am so turned around.......
Please Help me get to gingerbread. It would be helpful if I could do the way that I will proceed to JellyBean, via the Cyanomod stuff.

I'm going to read through all that in a minute.
I reflashed to stock rom, and was able to use kies to upgrade to Froyo then GB...so thats where I am now....
I'll be back in a few.....
 
I did not do anything with my Titanium Backup file, and have not installed my SDcard

Following the directions in your link....
Downloaded ROM Manager....
When selecting "Flash CWM Recovery" the list does not show Captivate. It has i9000 and some others.
At the bottom I can select "Device not listed", which then says.....
"SGH I897 does not have an officially supported CWM Recovery yet. Have you installed a CWM based recovery manually"
<yes/no>

I select no and....

"Sorry! until CMW recovery is available, ROM Manager will not work with SGH-I897"

....I'll just stop until i hear back from you, so I don't go backwards. I do have a clockworkrecovery.zip on my PC.....don't remember where its from.

If you are now on stock 2.3.5, then you should just use the korn kernel method as described in the linked thread.
 
Ok, I have the Corn Kernel installed and did the root through CmW.

Do I need to get rid of the ROM Manager app?

I am running the CmW backup....

Somehow the TI backup I had saved was from December of 2010...so I have lost a ton of stuff.....oh well.
 
Alright....

I guess now Im at the point where I will do the wipe, and cache clear and flash the ROM.
I have not picked out the rom yet. I'm unfamiliar with the differences between Hellybean, CM10, and Regular Jelly Bean, Slim Bean, Salty Bean....

Whichever is stable, and close to stock....prefarably with stock ATT crapware removed....would be a good choice for me.
 
First off, do not use rom manager EVER on a Samsung phone. It has the tendency to really mess with recovery to the point of needing to flash back to stock and starting over with Eclair. You don't want that ;).

As for which rom, that entirely up to you. I really am not familiar with all of them. I am currently rocking CM10 stable on one of my captivates and it is very stable and free of the bloat. (I like the startup animation, too ... eye candy, I'm a sucker for it.)

Just remember to follow the proper order and you will be fine.

  • Copy files to root of /sdcard
  • Boot into CWM recovery
  • Perform a nandroid backup
  • Factory reset/wipe data
  • Clear Cache
  • Clear Dalvik Cache (under advanced options - optional, but I always do it.)
  • Install from ZIP - ROM file
  • Install from ZIP - gapps
  • Reboot phone and enjoy. :D

Also remember that some of these steps take a while and make your phone appear to hang. This can be upwards of 10 ~ 20 minutes depending on roms. I don't recall CM10 taking that long, but it does feel like it's locked up. Just be patient.
 
Succesfully installed the HellyBean ROM.

Gapps did not install, it aborted. I tried installing it as a zip the sameway I did the ROM..That may be wrong?

At this point I know this rom is not for me, it has a nice clean look, but it lacks the Text below symbols and icons....I can't navigate it very well.

So are the steps the same, regarding the backup? I would think I might skip that, but then again maybe not since this is the first CM10 that I have done.

Wow, got it figured out. So much easier than it used to be...good lord these developers are some smart mofos. I'm gonnahave to donate some cashola, as they've saved me from buying a new phone, and signing another 2 year agreement to get BF'd by AT&T..... straight talk, here I come.
 
Great news! Glad you got it all set up.

gapps sometimes has issues with an install right after the rom. You have to try a couple of times before it succeeds. You also have to make sure it's the right version of apps. the gapps.zip files are not universal.

When flashing from one CM10 rom and/or kernel...... I know there is the Nanadroid backup but where/when do you use that....
I thought it would "get you back to where you were before" incase of a brick. Or is it used to more, so that all data (text,contacts)/settings/and apps are the same as before, and only the rom has changed...?
Then there is Titanium Backup.....

When I got to CM10....my phone was basically reset...My simcard was an unkempt mess (my fault from before)...I had all my media (pdfs/pictures/vids/audio) and all my message history, contacts were gone. Unfortunately the Titanium Backup I had was from 2010 (don't know how i managed that one) so there goes all my app data too.

If someone can clarify between the use of the two....or if there is something else that works better, it would be a huge help for me!

An nandroid will take a snapshot of both system and user data files that can be used to restore a device to that exact point in time. Boot into recovery and choose the backup option. It will put the backup files into a clockworkmod folder on your /sdcard partition. With newer roms for ICS and JB, some of them will reformat your /sdcard partition when you flash so it's important to copy the clockworkmod folder off your phone to make sure you don't lose your backup.

Then there is Titanium Backup.....

Titanium will back up your apps data and app settings so you may restore them individually. A nandroid must be restored completely and Titanium doesn't back up your system. You can do both to be sure you have a workable system and your apps acre current. For example, if you made a nandroid a month ago and then flashed a rom to try it out, after that month you wanted to go back to your previous version but didn't want to loose your progress for the month, you'd restore the nandroid and then use Titanium to update your apps and settings.

What post # is talking about isn't backups but the rom files you'll need to flash.
