Root How do i install Android 2.3 or Android 2.3 rom?

HI,

i'm from singapore and i'm a new member here. So i'm a noob.

I had the galaxy 551 since the begining of the year and now i'm starting to get bored . I managed to root my phone but now i want to install 2.3 on my phone. haha

so i just want to ask i few questions

1)How do i backup my phone. i know rom manager thingy does not work....So can someone tell me a detailed guide or solution on how to back up?

2)Is there an official 2.3 update? Should i install that or a custom rom, and which custom rom is the best?

3)how do i flash the rom and the kernel?do i need to update the firmware?

4)where do i get the tools like the odin thingy and the other stuff. ( Do i have to download from the hotfile place ? it does not work for me)

5)is there anything i should know about? is there android market even after i flash the rom?

thanks so much!!

Titanium Backup is the most rock solid method for app backup.

You will have to install Stock Gingerbread ROM before installing Arkas-Perseus Gingerbread ROMS

You will need Odin 4.34 (yes from hot file :( ) and Callisto.ops from samfirmware.com to install Custom ROM

Willing Magic has ported CyanogenMod for Froyo Bootloader so his custom ROM doesn't require Stock Gingerbread ROM pre-installed

statistically Willing Magic's ROMs are much better than Arkas or Perseus .It has a few bugs like No headset audio but he is going to fix it soon .

Arkas/Perseus comes with almost all Google APps (Except Maps ) .

Willing Magic's ROM need Google apps flashed which is pretty easy IMHO .

so which one do you think i should use? Stock, cyangenmod or Arkas/perseus ? um i've seen your guide on how to install Arkas

Sooo ...i've downloaded
1)CALLISTO_V1.0.ops
2)15510_Odin_Multi_Downloader_v4.34
3)15510XWKP5_I5510NEEKP1_I5510XXKPF.rar ( do i need this???? i think this should be firm ware or something like that, i took it from samfirmware)
4)Levianthanr.7z ( i think this should be the Arkas Rom)

As for the Stock and cyangenmod....i have no clue on what to do...pls help. haha anyway thanks for the help so far. you're soo quick...

Haha I will say install Arkas since I am the codeveloper ;)

OK Let me clear some stuff .
Right now your phone runs on Froyo Bootloader

Arkas 0.3,0.4,0.401,0.533,0.564 (Levaithan) ,All work on Froyo Bootloader .

Also Willing's CyanogenMod(Gingerbread) Runs on Froyo Bootloader .
Right now his ROM has two bugs .
WiFi has to operated via command line ,
and Music player cant be played with headset

SO if you have to flash Arkas 0.564 Leviathan or Willing's CM Mod just go ahead

This link to his build
[DEV][Samsung Galaxy GT-I5510 Callisto][ROM & Kernel]Unofficial Cyanogenmod 7 - xda-developers

Now

15510XWKP5_I5510NEEKP1_I5510XXKPF.rar is Stock Gingerbread Official ROM .
It has Gingerbread Bootloader
You need to install stock gingerbread ROM for Gingerbread ROMs
Only two ROMs work in it

Arkas 1.2 which is quite basic
and Perseus 2 which is a bit unstable

Willing Magic's CyanogenMod doesnt wok on Gingerbread Bootloader

SUPER STRICT WARNING DONT EVER MIX AND MATCH FROYO AND GINGERBREAD ROMS .IF YOU DO PHONE MAY BRICK .

Stock Gingerbread is hell lot faster than Froyo Custom Roms. But Willing Magic's CM is faster than GB

Stock Ginger Bread is the safest bet :) . Then you can experiment to your heart's content .Always first try Stock ROMs to get a hang of Odin .

ohhhh, ok that clears alot of things up...i think i shall go with stock 2.3 since it is the safest...and i'm noob...and i still left 1 year before a new phone, cannot brick!!!

if i'm correct, this is what i should do?

1)back up phone with titium backup( i have done this already, i think it stores the data in the sd card, so i can restore at anytime)
2)open odin then put the .ops file
3)under "select integrate pakage" i put the .rar file that i downloaded( this part i'm most unsure)
4)set my phone to download mode and connect to com
5)drink some water to clam myself and then flash
6)let the phone reboot and celebrate
7)if nessasary use titanium back up to go back to 2.2?

yeah so i think it should be like that....
thanks in advance!

No you got it all messed up

1.)Titanium Backup only backs up android apps
2.)Open Odin and Load Callisto.ops File
3.)Unrar the package.
I5510XWKP5_I5510NEEKP1_I5510XXKPF_HOME.tar.md5 is the File needed
4.)Check the One package Option .
5.)set my phone to download mode and connect phone with USB port .
6.)click start
7.)Wait till phone reboots
8.)celebrate

If you want to switch back to Froyo . Use Odin again to flash I5510XWKD4 OR I5510DDJK4 firmware .

Titanium Backup will restore only android applications

oh okay, i shall use other apps to backup everything else like music and photos...

um i have one more probelm , when i try to unrar the file( i use 7-zip) , it says i need a password. i just left it blank and went to unrar it, when it was almost done , it says it has an error.... At the end of the line it says "wrong password?"

when i check the file where the extracted file is surpposed to be , it is there . However when i check properties, it is 0 bytes ....so what should i do to overcome this probelm?

One of the most import things while installing a custom ROM
DONT SPEED READ STUFF
Always read entire page carefully .

Long way of saying password is samfirmware.com
(It was mentioned on the page );)

i think i know everything i should know....shall do the flashing on thusday, after my test...haha
(unless you think i don't know something important?)

hey i just need to ask one more question from you guys, what is the "reset time(sec)" thing on odin? i read the guide from samfirmware.com and they said to change it to 30?
do i need to do that?

wow, omg that was dam scary....guys I bricked my phone...

HAHA NOPE ,I HAVE STOCK 2.3 ON MY PHONE...!!!! THANKS SO MUCH!!
MAYBE ONE DAY I WILL TRY YOUR ROM!! REALLY REALLY HAPPY, THANKS SO MUCH HAHA

hi i have sucessfully ugraded to 2.3, but i can't root....i've seen in the forums that your surpposed to patch the easy root thing, i have all the files slready but am i surpposed to put the easy root.tar.mp5 at the pda than flash it like downloading the stock andriod?

also i have a probelm with the ? and , when i pressed these 2 bottons on the keyboard, a and o with the dots ontop comeout....how can i fix it???

I read all the post, but just one question, it is still valid this way of upgrading these days?. I know it is just 4 months more or less, but I also want to upgrade to stock Gingerbread, I am sick of the wifi problems.

Depends on your Location .
In Europe it's valid and legal .
In others it's not .
But I sent my Gingerbread Phone in Warranty and nobody cared if it was GB or Froyo ,rooted or unrooted .

i currently have a rooted I5510 (india) :
pda:15510DDJK4
phone : 15510DDJK4
csc :15510ODDJK4
currently every thing is working fine .... i am thinking of upgrading to GB ....

which stock rom is best for me (KPG ?)... and what errors might i expect(software wise)
the problem with the keys.. is it only with the symbols ....?(what symbols exactly)
