How do I keep my Droid from closing out apps when I exit them?

I like to play games a lot and when I multitask and exit (but not close) the app on my Droid Razr Maxx HD, it always goes back to the start screen when I go back to the game. How do I get it to stop doing that?

What do you mean by "exit" when leaving a game, etc.? Do you hit your Home button or your Back button?

Sorry for lack of clarification. When I press the home button, or the button on the right that lets me select what app to switch to (kind of like alt+tab).
