Help How do I make a profile picture appear in Gmail?

JohnJSal

Android Expert
I've noticed that I have a generic yellow "head" icon in the Gmail app, despite the fact that I do have a profile picture associated with my Google account. How do I make my picture appear instead?

Thanks!

I don't know if you can edit your photo on your phone but using a computer/laptop browser just log into your account, click on the 'Gear' icon in the upper right, select 'Settings', and in the 'General' tab scroll down to the 'My picture' section to get to 'Change picture'.

Nuts, I just re-read your post, and you already have a photo set up in you Google account. I guess the question is which email client app are you using on your phone?

I can already see my profile picture on Google+, which I assume is just the Google account itself. I see it when I sign into Google and pretty much everywhere associated with Google, just not in the Gmail app.

Have you tried just clearing the cache for the Gmail app? Sounds like everything is OK, it's just a glitch with the Gmail app on your phone. Go into Settings >> More >> Application manager and in the 'Downloaded' tab scroll down to your Gmail app. Click on the 'Force stop' button, then click on the 'Clear cache' button. Then go back to your home screen and launch the Gmail app.

Just so we are all on the same page, you are talking about this photo in the gmail app?

Try this, it may kick things in gear.
Settings, Accounts, Google, People Details...allow it to sync.
A long while back contact pics weren't syncing correctly and that seemed to fix it. If it does work you should be able to go back and un-sync it and still have it stay. I do recall having major issues with mine but don't any longer.

Unfortunately, neither of these worked.

Odd.
The only other things I can think of are checking your settings in Gmail, be sure you have your profile pic checked to allow everyone to see it. Also, check in G+/about me page, make sure your pic is there too?

In your Gmail app, are other people's personalized icons (as in other Gmail users) also just showing up as generic icons or is it just your photo not showing up properly?

The other image of my puppies is the background image for my G+ page. If you log onto G+ using a PC does it show your profile picture there?

Those two gree circles are other email accounts. the gmail app now can act as a client for other imap and pop3 accounts so it's all centralized.

Yes, both Google+ and Gmail websites have the profile picture there. I'm not sure about other people's images, because the images that I do see I think are coming from the profile picture I have for them in my contacts, not from their own Gmail accounts.

Also, I noticed that the image does appear in the Google+ app, but it doesn't appear in the Google Drive app. So I don't understand why it appears in some apps but not in others.

I'm seeing it in all my Google apps ... gmail, G+, Hangouts, Drive etc. What version of Android are you using?
