How do I make my Android a hot spot?

Tallyfins

I have an Android laptop (Vizio) that does not have 3G functionality. I have tried a couple of apps to make my phone (2 year old Motorola A855) a hot spot and none of them have worked. Is there anything I can use WITHOUT having to root my phone? (The one I tried was something like PDATablet.net or something like that.) A friend has a newer Motorola phone and when he goes under Settings (Settings, Wireless & Networks, Tethering), he has the option to check "Enable Hotspot" or something like that. I don't see that on my phone. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks, TF

It's up to your carrier - on mine it returns an error when I try to enable it.
