Root How do I prepare for ICS install?

This is slightly different from existing threads-----Am running 2.3.6, version 6.12.173 on XT912, rooted with Motofail.
My problem is that I have never been able to update to 6.12.181-----Always get the yellow exclamation point followed by "Installation failed".
How do I prepare the Maxx so it will be ready to download & install ICS with no problems?-----Do I need to unroot & get back to factory cond?-----If other apps are needed such as Voodoo, Safestrap, etc, along with wipe/backup instructions, please advise with the specific order & how-to-do which apply to each procedure.

Moving this to the root section


Yes, fastboot back to stock (.173 or .181), root with motofail, install Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper. Use Rootkeeper to protect root AND temp unroot. Do ICS update. Once update is completed go back into Rootkeeper and restore root.

Glad I found this thread as I was 50 % downloaded on the ICS update....I did the above instructions with OTA Rootkeeper before the download finished!
