Unless you are using visual voicemail, it's automatic from your carrier (assuming your mailbox is configured). I'm not sure if it works for Metro PCS, but many GSM networks will respond with your mailbox number when *#104# is dialed. If you have a visual voicemail app, go into Settings > Manage apps and ensure that notifacations are turned on for it.
