Root How do I take full advantage of CyanogenMod 7?

I really don't understand why this rom is so popular. It has a terrible UI, and I can't figure out how to change it to my liking. Am I missing something?
Do kernels improve customization or something?
How do I get/flash kernels?

Sorry for all the stupid questions, I'm pretty new to this.
 
I recommend going to MENU-->SETTINGS-->CYANOGENMOD SETTINGS, and trying out all the settings there. You'll find some options that will make your phone more useful and more convenient.

I like the power control widget that sits on the notification bar. You can customize that to your liking.

I like the ability to fast forward a song with the screen off by holding the Vol up button.
 
Kernels are flashed via "choose zip from card", after flashing a ROM (can be done at any time after the ROM is flashed). Don't wipe data again before flashing the kernel.

The link in the stickied Incredible ROM thread doesn't work (at least for me) at the moment, but kernels can be found there when it does (sorry, that's not much help). I am partial to Incredikernel because it supports the DInc's optical joystick better than the stock CM7 kernel.

It sounds like you're used to Sense ROMs or ROMs that are extensively themed. The mods in CM7 are much more fundamental and less of the eye-candy variety than is the case with many ROMs. It grows on you. :D

P.S. A different launcher might be all you need to start enjoying CM7! Launcher Pro Plus is my favorite.
 
I would do as he said...use a launcher (I prefer adw ex) get Chad's incredikernal and get a theme. Darkginger is a great one IMO.
 
adw launcher is packaged in cyanogenmod, is it not? first thing I do is load launcherpro, and remove adw...

CM7 is a vanilla rom and it's up to the end user to customize it to their liking, which is unlike most other roms where the developer has already customized it to "their" liking. Like other people have stated, the first step is choosing a launcher (adw is preloaded). From there you can download icon packs and themes, customize the app drawer/dock. Then you can also download a theme for the rom itself, which can customize the notification bar icons/colors etc. the possibilities are endless really.
 
Adw laucher settings, themes. There is a option that will take you to the market where you can download all sorts of themes that will give you all sorts of options. In the app drawer you have an app called theme chooser. This goes a step further than the Adw settings. Through this you can apply themes that change your battery and signal icons among other things. You have to go to the market and search for Cm7 themes and then apply them through the theme chooser app. The possibilities are endless. Also download sense analog clock widget. This is virtually identical to the sense clock with loads of different skins to choose from. With all the appearance options and performance you get out of cm7, it really is all that it is said to be. With the official gb 2.3.4 update for the dinc, cm7 will only get better. Kernel manager, get the first "tiamat" kernel on the list. Flash it like normal while wiping dalvik only. I use CPU boost to over and underclock. Good choice of governors as well. Questions? Pm me.
 
+1 to using launcher pro plus and incredikernel (although kernel will not customize)

If you want more customization options, try MIUI. can download rom at miui.us.
 
Any more info on Kernals? I'm not even sure what they do (though I think they change the way hardware performs - like overclocking). I have CM7...how do I flash a kernal? Any 'how to' s on this?

1. Download kernel.
2. Put it on root of SD Card.
3. Reboot into recovery.
4. Flash. No wipes needed.
 
Um it looks like that kernel is for galaxy s phones, unless I'm missing something I don't think it will work on ours.
